I'd say just go with the Audigy. It's a proven sound card with good performance. Can't go wrong with it.

I'd have to ask what the price you are looking to pay or paying for those 2 cards. For a lower price sound card solution I would pick up an x-fi xtrememusic on ebay as they generally go for $40-50....closer to 40 if a bit lucky. This is not the cut down crippled new extremeaudio and extremegamer they released. It is one of the original x-fi lineup cards and offers everything but x-ram and the front panel (which can be bought later if desired). If that is more than your price range forget what I said and go with your choice.

Good point d4rr3n- I was going to say the same thing as I just picked up a brand new X-Fi from ebay for $55 shipped. The Audigy value can be had for around $30 shipped at online retailers, maybe less on eBay. I would say the extra $25 is worth it.

Yeah I did a bit of searching I can't really find the value anywhere, not a thorough search though. Creative did have it on sale for $39 at their website but are apparently sold out. I only see 2 on ebay right now and both are in the $30's. If it's close to $50 vs. mid $30's I think the x-fi is a no brainer, though I don't know what he is paying for the value card or if he can swing the extra money. Like I mentioned it's a fully featured x-fi model just with no front panel/remote and no 64mb of xram (I know you already know all this, just some info for the OP). It's kind of crappy what Creative did cut out the cheaper but equal original models then rename/replace with similar sounding but crippled products in the same price range. I bet a lot were fooled into buying something they thought was another, oh well gotta stay informed these days.

The audigy2 value is good no doubt but a full fledged x-fi is much better IMHO and like you said I think the extra $15-25 is well worth it if that is indeed the difference. Good deal on the card btw, I may pick one up myself for a 2nd machine. I want to see how the newest HD onboard is first though compared to my x-fi platinum. I got my fingers crossed one of them can come close to what soundstorm could do on straight optical out. Ideally I'd like to pick up something like the headroom desktop amp and just go straight optical into it bypassing as much of the pc internals as possible. If the ALC888DD or ALC882D or whatever the best ones are will do that properly I'll be happy.

Audigy value is still available at most online retailers, like newegg:

But like you said, for the money I'd just get an X-Fi.

I was a bit confused I guess, the audigy SE (software edition) is the same as audigy value? I was looking for the Audigy2 value that is on creative's US site and is a full size card with much more hardware options. Hard to keep track with so many identical versions and name changes.

It's so freakin' confusing...so what's the difference between the value and the SE??? The cards look identical!

Well I'm certainly not an expert on that as I fell out of the audigy loop when using soundstorm and never went back until I got the x-fi platinum. But I'd say they are identical cards and creative just chose to relabel the value as the SE, maybe they thought it sounded better or it would stimulate new sales with people thinking a new card is out. I see 0 visible difference and the specs are identical, gotta be the same.

Maybe some better questions is why remove the great xtreme music and replace it with the very similarly named but absolutely crippled xtreme audio. Is the xtreme audio actually even an x-fi card, as it looks (and performs) like a revised audigy SE. Why have 2 current cards called the xtreme gamer when one is nowhere near as good as the other.....and why 2 fatality cards...etc etc. It does get confusing, I mean I don't see how the average consumer would possibly understand the lineup.

I don't see what was wrong with the original lineup you had 4 cards for 4 segments at 4 price points. They all had basically the same capabilities with minor additions as you went above the standard music card, these being the I/O front panel for multimedia people, xram for gamers, and higher quality components for the audiophiles. Now who knows what's going on and what you get.
