So, for those of you that have one, how's it's performance? I've been hearing mixed reviews about how it's better/worse for games than something geforce3-based. If I get one, it'll pretty much be dedicated to games. So, would this card be the best, or would there be something better?

At the moment, if you're looking for top-of-the-range performance and a reasonably future-proof card, either the 8500 or the Ti500 will serve you well. However be prepared to pay a bit more for the Ti500.

Neither card is being used to anywhere near their maximum potential at the moment.

yeah, i agree with Violator that both cards arent being used to their full potential and are right now about the same in performance, but i n a driver update or two the 850 should be a lot better choice...

I have to say the 2-d on the Radeon kicks @ss but my Counter-strike issue is making me contemplate getting a Ti500

The Radeon also wooped my Gf2 Ultra's butt in Madonion2001 by several thousand points.....But I like CS and ATI just like previous ATI products I have owned has driver issues.....I was giving ATI a second chance when I bought this 8500!

MY biggest 8500 issue is this(Fixed the overflow issue I had with the patch but the patch eliminated full screen viewing :

I cant seem to be able to use the whole screen in OPENgl, as I see about 25% of the CS screen.

IN Direct3D I can view the whole screen.

Ive tried reinstalling the 8500 drivers made sure the resolution is 1024x768 in the CS console, I run desktop at same resolution @85mhz

SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME

try running desktop at 60gHz, just to see if it works...

i've had my 8500 for over a month now, the 2-d performance is amazing and the gaming is great as well. i haven't run the ti 500 yet but i'm sure the dvd playback and other 2d apps will be better on the 8500. using the latest drivers from omegadrive the performance was beautiful on my slot a 750 @ 990, of course i might as well be using a rage 128 on my celly 533 back up comp. xp 1600 and 8kha+ will be here soon and i'll post some benches.
all in all. i love my 8500 although the tearing in cs is quite irratating but i'm sure it's a driver issue and could possibly be taken care of in future driver release or with appropriate tweaks...

wait, therre is a bug with XP and 2k that always sets default refresh rate to 60hz...try using powerstrip to change this so when gaming the rate changes...

Yah I know about the XP deal with the default adapter issue and thats not the culprit.

Man I hate ATI as I had this same kind of driver issues when I tried out 2 different Radeons a year ago.

The 8500 is a nice competetor to NVidea's Ti500 but as I stated Nvidea has thier sh$t together in the driver dept. and ATI seemingly has no clue how to put together the whole package so to speak.

That's really the only unfortunate point.

There wil be a new driver release very shortly and I bet it will solve the issue. Do not give up on ATI the 8500 is the bomb and will only keep impressing you.

I just formatted a spare HDD and going to try to solve this CS issue using Win 98 or ME

If still buggy I will reinsert the trusty Gf2 Ultra and wait for ATI to release a better driver as I really like the clean crisp image in 2-d

But im not holding my breath ;)

Ps Kind of a bummer my Alpha pal 15u wont fit on this 8500 but then again the GPU is extremely cool and the ram barely even feels warm.

I dont know why anyone would put ramsinks on an 8500

*****EDIT/UPDATE******

Format fixed the problem, and I shucked win XP until ATI releases some better drivers.

Radeon=Good card.
I love this card. It gives me a 8200marks range with nothing overclocked in my system.
