View Full Version : Core2Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz
This is my first post here and i am hoping i can get some help. I looked through a few posts but did not find what i needed. And for some reason the search link at the top would not work for me. I clicked it several times but no search box came up, so i apologize if this has been covered. I also checked the CPU database but did not find any Core2Duo listed.
I of course want to overclock my system a little, nothing major, just a little boost. Here is what i have.

I figure my other things would not come into play but just in case
Enermax 620W PSU, XFX GeForce 7600GT card, Gigabyte Poseidon case.
I was looking to see if someone could help me out as to which settings to change and what i can enter to SAFELY overclock it. I had it running at 2.5 per core for a while (a friend did that) but a BIOS upgrade wiped it out and i did not have the settings written down.(I know, not too bright).
Thank you in advance.
You know how to enter the BIOS, right? I've never played with a MSI motherboard, so I don't know the exact configuration. Go into the BIOS and find the FSB setting. This could also be called system frequency or something like that. There might be a CPU clock speed setting that says "auto". Change that to "user define". The default FSB (frequency) is 266 MHz. Try changing that to 300 FSB at first, that will give you 2.4 gig. If that works ok, your RAM should easily handle 333 FSB, which would be 2.66 gig. Above that speed, you might need more voltage and cooling.
Yeah, getting into the BIOS is not a problem. I know a little about PC's but overclocking is pretty new to me, all my other systems were premade crap. This one i built myself so i could get a good system that was upgradeable (like that motherboard can handle a quad-core processor, if they ever come down in price) 2.66 would be great, so i will look at the settings when i get home tonight and see what they say. I think you can change all of them like the voltage and such as i seem to remember doing that with my friend last time. But i will post the original settings here so you can have a look at what they say before i go messing with anything myself. Thank you  (me tomorrow night, LOL)
P.S. would burning something that takes about 45 minutes be a good test to see if everything is working right without issues or crashes? Or do you recommend something else?

Down load those 3 programs Coretemp , Tat , And orthos
http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/CoreTemp/
http://sp2004.fre3.com/beta/beta2.htm
Dont know the link for tat but im sure google does .
Coretemp is a nice temp monitor
Tat has temp monitoring and stress testing
and orthos is for stress testing . most ppl after they oc run Orthos for 24 hours on the small fft's , if it passes with out erros it is considered stable
edit : I was right google had it =) http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/392/mirrors.php
ok, will do. I have no problems letting it run overnight, and then while i am at work.

TAT --> http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/392/mirrors.php
So, the FSB is the only setting i need to change to overclock to 2.66 per core? Just so i know.

yes you prob wont need to change the voltages for that small of a oc
ok, i set it to 300 and on startup it is now saying 2.4GHz for the CPU so we will see how that goes before i try 333
It is 300x8.0 (from 266x8.0)
but i downloaded TAT and it will not work, gives an error of
"error enumeratoing on demand clock modulation support...terminating tool"
not sure what that means? But Orthos is working so i will just use that, I have a program to monitor heat called Everest home edition
Will Orthos give me a message if something fails?

yes, orthos will tell you if something fails. are you on Vista? i don't think TAT works with that.
use Coretemp maybe?

I don't know if you want to go right to 333.....maybe ease your way up a bit........you also might need a bit more voltage there to keep it happy...
well as for now i have had Orthos running for 8 hours along with another program just so the PC is doing something. And no error messages have shown up. The thing i have to look into is the heat issue. I can get a program that monitors it, but not knowing how much is too much kind of makes that useless really. I think my case has 2 120MM fans in it and i am not sure there are slots for more. I wrote down what all my original settings were, but seeing that it was on start up i am sure those temp. numbers were very low.
But i also wanted to say thanks to everyone helping, i do not think that people do that often enough on forums.
P.S. So crosshairs, where is PA are you from? I am originally from Rural PA myself. between Allentown and Philly.
well, so far a few days at 300GHz and no problems or crashes. So i suppose everything is ok. Still not sure how far i can push it without any heat issues.
I think i read somewhere that anything past 313 and you would have to do voltage increases and have good cooling.
Whether you need extra vcore or not depend on how good of a CPU you have and how much your motherboard droops voltage. I've seen some E6400 that will do 350 FSB on default voltage. Never know until you try. Bump up the speed to 310 and try that, Bro. Test for stability and check temps. If that works, go for 320 FSB. Report back on how you do.
