I just burned two of my modems to a lightning strike a week back and am in the market for a replacement. Call charges in SA are horrendously expensive so I want as much speed as possible. I was thinking of getting a 128k ISDN modem and converting my fax line to ISDN. With the basic service I would get 2 analogue ports (1x fax, 1x phone) and 5 ISDN ports. I have tried the ISP helpline but theyre hopeless so if anyone from South Africa (or any other country) has any experince, any help is welcome :D
I was thinking of getting the ISDN modem + line and just dailing into my normal 56k account since a ISDn account costs 4x a normal account. Will this work? Cos I thought that since the exchange does a digital -> analgue conversion anyway, dailing from ISDN will just boost my rates more. The problem with 56k is that there is line noise etc and some parts are still not fully digital. On the ISDN line, I would theoretically bypass all this and get a 'digital' 56k dail-up. Can it work this way???
