This is amazing! I recieved my new ABIT KR7A-RAID the other day and when I tried to remove the heatsink from my previous board I heard some crackling. I had difficulties removing it and got really stressed  coz I had to use some force. My screwdriver was losing its "grip" on the clip but eventually I managed to get the thing off. When cleaning the CPU core I saw that there were small metal pieces around the edge of one side of the core. I thought SH*T and had a closer look and saw the were missing a bit of the core along the whole side of it

I saw money falling out the window and went down in a downward spiral of depression and dispear :( coz that meant it would take days before I had my puter up and running. Then I thought let me just try it - that cant hurt. So I did. Did a very lousy Artic Silver aplliance (which I regret now!!) and put it all together and my system posted - WOW - and not only that but I have now W98se and everything else up and running :D - I even oc the CPU a tiny bit!!! I cant believe it. Should this be actually possible at all??? All I have read is that when a chip comes off the core thats it - CPU dead and needs to be buried for good!

All I can say is that Im grateful to whichever force is letting my CPU run under its condition

Sometimes, they can live through being chipped. I have read of Durons with multiple chipped corners that still work. Consider yourself lucky.:)

Your very lucky. Out of the 3 athlons that i have chipped only one survived and it lost 300mhz of its overclock.

You wanna see my T-Bird!!!! Lets say every time I take the HSF off I hear cracking!!!

All along the top of it is sharp and ragged and there was loads of metal all around the core, now theres some sort of green gunk thats oozed out of it!!!

Gets to 1300 from 1000 at Default Voltage Though!!!!

I have three chipped core cpus. 1 Duron and 2 Tbirds and they perform no different than before they were chipped. Here's my 600 Duron that runs 7.5x150 "Til the cows come home".

They're MPs are brown also so I think they are making the XP in different color so people will be able to tell the difference from a long distance or not reading what's written on the core, maybe..

I'm not 100% certain on this but from what I can see the "core" is just an extra bit of silicon used for heat dispersion.

If you chip a tiny bit off the top part, the heat dispersion will be less effective leading to a poorer overclock (due to heat).

However, if you chip the core with force, it might actually crack the silicon layers inside (leading to a dead cpu).

If you can understand that - it's all I can think of.
