I have heard good things about Dell laptops. I think that IBM makes a good, tough laptop, but I don't think the prices are as good. My IBM has been through hell and back, and still works. Too bad, though, it is horribly outdated.
Dell,Toshiba,IBM,and Sony, those are the 4 names I look for when buying a laptop...all 4 make great laptops in my opinion but all four have their cheap(er) models and the top of the line wallet smashers...

Stay clear of Compaq, we use them at work and everyone of them we've had has a problem of some kind.
I'd vote for Dell, then IBM, then maybe HP. The funny thing about it is that I have a Sager which is pretty much a generic system from a company that offers lousy customer support. The prices were fantastic and the notebook isn't mission critical so I figured I could put up with a little BS if necessary in this case. If this notebook is important then I would stick with one of the major brands listed, except Compaq. They have fair enough support but they seem to have more problems with their stuff than everyone else.

I like the compaq presario's design, but not what they put under the hood... except the 1200 model with Athlon4 @ 1GHz, these are the ones I like. Donno about you ppl, but I haven't had any (almost) problems with my Compaq.

Dell ones are well-priced, but they had that battery-lighting-on-fire problem a while ago. Also Dell's tech support is hyped, but it sucks. Believe me, Dell tech support is about as useful as throwing feces at your children while standing on top of your roof. (not useful!)
avoid compaq and hp. My school has a laptop program, and everyone who has either of thse makes(compaq and HP) faces lotsa trouble. Drivers not fully working, screens breaking, etc.
Matters what you need it for. for gaming, go with dell. for image work, sony. for work, ibm. all around, i'd go for ibm, its great quality, but no bundled software. and get atleast 128 mb of ram.

I do support for Dell laptops.
Don't worry, MrOOBiLL, I do not work for Dell. I work for a service provider that is a Dell partner.
I agree with touser, those are the brands to look at for laptops.
Dell auctions off some of its surplus, http://www.dellauctions.com Someting in the Latitude line is usually available for a good price.

I've delt with fujitsu, toshiba, DELL, IBM and arm, and panasonic laptops, and would have to say that IBM makes the best laptops overall for everday use, and panasonic tough books for you outdoor types.
i just got a email from alienware(i ahve an alienware) and theyve started production on a laptop series. its about 3000 bucks, set you back quite a way. Only great feature is upgradable processor. come with cd-rom, mp3 module 11mb of graphics mem. I wouldn't buy this, but it does look nice and thin.
