I've got a VisionTek Nvidia GeForce 2 GTS 64MB DDR Card and the fan's burned out on it. Bummer. Now the underside's as hot as an oven, and I KNOW I can't run like this. Please could someone advise me if there is an 'upgrade kit' available - I'd like to replace the existing heat sink and fan and also add ram sinks.

Please be aware that I don't want to do a McGyver on this - I'm looking for a professional result that will be reliable.

Advice as to how to get the old heat sink without completely trashing the chip underneath would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Ron

2CoolTek (http://2cooltek.safeshopper.com/51/cat51.htm?375) has a kit that'll do what you're looking for. To get the olf heatsink off, put it in an anti-static bag and freeze it for 15+ minutes. Take it out quickly and either twist the heatsink off, or use a small screwdriver to carefully pry it off. You should also use some sort of barrier between the card and the screwdriver to protect it

if the old HSF is glued on you could seal the card in a antistatic bag and stick in the freezer for 20 min or so then pop the heatsink off with a razor or some other strong thin tool.
if it is not glued on you need to release the holding mechanism.

I have not done the former personally.
so if you need to do that someone else should be able to explain it better than me

guess I was beaten by the cow:D

Before you feeze it you could try turning it on for a bit tosoften the grease.... (oh yeah it might over heat...)

Don't forget if you freeze it to let it thaw, don't want condensation! Where did you get it from, I thought you could RMA it under the warranty even if you bought it off someone. (Email Manufacturer) although its probably easier just to take it off!

the whole point of putting it in the freezer is to make the gunk brittle so it breaks, letting it warm up to ambient is stupid

Wrong again!!!!:D

Actually warming it up (Ie: 3 Hours full load) softens it enough for it to easily come off in a lot of cases. Some people don't like sticking electrics in the freezer:rolleyes:

If its on good then yeah freeze it, but be careful, the warmup method is good as there is no risk in turning it on.

Although your fan is busted so it might over heat, although if you've been using it then.....

Try the freezer method, I don't want you mucking your card!!!

HEAT VS. COLD CONTROVERSY RAGES!

An honest enquiry by Ron Davison, newbie, seems to have sparked off a heat vs. cool war.

Ron is confused as to what is implied by ambient temberature, as he lives in Wyoming, and the temperature is about 2 degrees f at present.

Seriously guys, THANK YOU for all the advice. It's guys like you that make computing fun!

Best,

Ron

in taht case you really dont need to stick it in the fridge, and also i agree with nick, i just played unreal for like an hour and wiggled the heatsink off...no biggie....im not putting anything in the freezer (might forget and eat it :p )
