Well, I just got thru performing the unclocking mod on my Athlon XP 1800+, and when I went to place my new Glaciator II back on the chip after modification, I noticed I had broken off one of the little plastic lips (on the socket that holds the cpu in) that the heat sink uses to attach itself to. I managed to get the heatsink attached because there's just a little tiny bit of that lip left. So, it's probably hanging by a thread. I even have my computer sitting on its side so there's no pressure on the lip from the sink. My questions are:

1. Can I buy a new socket, or do I have to replace the motherboard now? Or what else, if anything can I do?

2. What happens now, if the heatsink clip slips off that tiny bit of lip, so that it would basically just be sitting on top of the processor?

3. Is it safe to run the computer if the heatsink clip comes off and it's just sitting there without any pressure or support? (until I do whatever I need to do to fix this problem)

4. Any suggestions???

one option is to use a heatsink that uses bolts or all three lips.
sorry to hear about it. Goodluck.

And in case my only 2 options here are replacing the motherboard or getting a new HSF that has the 4 bolts attaching it to the motherboard, can someone recommend a high-end HSF that would be as good or better than my Glaciator II?

The 2 bolt on coolers are the Swiftech MCX462 (The best there is) and the Alpha Pal 8045 ( 2nd best but also half the price). I would no recommend running your puter with a marginal HSF connection/attachment. There are also some HSF's that use all 3 tabs to hook on to the socket, that would work too, I just can't think of who makes them and if they are any good. Anyone?

So, even though it's currently on, but possibly grasping a tiny lip, AND considering I have my Epox 8KHA+ set to shut down at 158F, you still recommend not running it? If so, why?

If you can find the part that broke off you can superglue it back on.
Some people file whats left of the tab flat then glue a piece of plastic to it.

Only two heatsinks that use the 4 holes for mounting that I know of are the swiftech 462a and the alpha 8045 the swiftech is better at cooling but also alot more expensive.

This place sells both:

Sorry to hear that happened :(

I've seen people do this mod before:

file off any leftover plastic
Take a narrow piece of aluminum sheetmetal, and bend it over at one end
place that end closest to where the lug was on the socket
epoxy it into place and let it harden.

voila! Instant replacement lug.

When I first put my sk6 on I just set it on the cpu trying to see if it was on correctly I figured the AS2 would tell the story but when I went to look at the bottom of the HSF there was no AS2 on there. Which means the 4 pads were lifting the HSF stightly above the core so it would definetly not be safe to run my HSF without the clip applying the pressure I imagine this is the case with just about any hsf unless you can find one that weighs like ten pounds lol.

I'm going to start being very careful with my hsf installs from now on for sure. Sorry to here about your bad luck please post when you get it all fixed up again I'd like to know how you end up solving the problem you know just in case.

the new swiftech revision of the mcx360 uses all 3 lips (and has a copper base)

There is a link on the front page for repairs, for fixing the broken tab Here (http://www.overclockers.com/tips284) . Also Hoot did a feature on how to fix a heatsink without using a clip, I can't find it at the moment so I will ask him to post a link in this Thread:)

Unfortunately, the article appears to have fallen out the bottom of the articles list. I have not been able to find it for some time now. I don't know if the admins save them somewhere, once they fall out. You might try sending them an inquiry about that. If all else fails, I still have the article in the MS Word format that I used to submit it for publication and could send it to you as an email attachment.

These are all heatsinks that can be mounted either by all the clips of the socket or by the bolts on the mobo.

Hope that helps
