Portable HDD wont recognize

My friend is currently having issues getting his portable usb connected harddrive. No matter what slot he hooked it up to, it his os would not recognize it. He's running Windows XP Home with SP2. Maxtor Remote Hard Drive, Personal Storage 3100, 80 GB. He has connected it to other computers in his home and it is recognized on other computers. We are pretty darn sure that the drivers for it aren't working well together, and we were not sure where we could obtain new drivers, or if there was another method of getting this computer to recognize the portable hdd.

Comptuer Specs I know of is:
Pentium 4, 2Ghz
1 Gig Ram Unknown speed

I got the same thing here, portable HDD's, flashdrives and my mp3 player don't get recognized but other USB devices do. I'm guessing windows got corrupted or something, no biggie since I'll be switching to a new rig + Vista soon anyway.

Try inserting the windows disk and do a windows repair, if it's driver related that would probably fix it.
