There is some kind of rubber type of thing on the bottom of my HS, with a chunk missing from the middle when the CPU fits in. What is it and does it do...if anything? Should I remove it? HELP!
Thanks

I am sure that is the thermal pad that came with the heat sink. It melts to the core when it gets hot enough. At this point, you need to remove all of that pad and used another thermal paste when you reapply the heatsink.

If i'm reading his post right, it looks like it may be just the oppsite(SP<---). He ay have been shipped a neoprene shim with his heatsink, in which case I'd say leave it where it is. But to be absolutely sure, we need to know what heatsink you have.

Yeah if it is kinda thick, and neoprene, leave it on. You still need some thermal paste.

Thermal paste was already on there. Its the hs/f that comes with the AMD 1.4 Ghz t-bird. Does that help any more?

How thick is this rubbery thing? That will help. Also, is it a stock, aluminum heatsink, (not brand name)?

Does it look like this?

or possibly like this?
If so, it is just a thermal pad.

It looks like the first one you attached. What should I do about it? Remove it and get some Silver 2 on it?

Yes that would be a thermal pad. DO remove it and put on some artic silver II.

Thanks for the help everyone, until I can get my hands on artic silver, I will just leave it on. My temps are cool, 29 at load on the CPU, becuase it is running slower then it should be.

Buy some Arctic Alumina. It's cheaper than AS2.
what is the purpose of using neoprene??!?!?!??
just go to radio shack and get a tube of their generic heat sink compound
its only $2 and it works just fine

Insulation for condensation, that is all I have seen it used for. Not really applicable when not using peltier...

Also, those pads are not always easy to get off...I have tried to heat it up with a hair drier and scraped it off with a credit card. Don't use anything that will scratch the surface of the metal!!! It is a pain, but make sure you get it all off.
A friend of mine had this stuff called "Adhesive Remover" and that just disolved it and it wiped right off. I am not sure what that stuff is, but it worked fantastic.
Maybe nail polish remover or acetone would work, some kind of solvent.
