thinking abaout getting a seagate 7200.10 320gb, and create 2 partitions on it. 200gb for OS and 150 for back up, but i afraid that split the hard drive like that will slow down / decrease the performance of the hard drive. Thanks

Making more partitions on a harddrive will not slow it down.

Using the same disc for backup is not the best option, get two discs and use second disc as backup drive or create a RAID0 and RAID1 with Intel Matrix (If you have IHCxR controller)

The second partition will start where the first one ends. So if you make the first 200 gigs, the second will start at 201. It will be slower than the first, but that is due to the physical drive, since it is not near the beginning of the platter.

You are right - but if he make one partition and reaches the 201GB mark on the disc it won't matter if he has one or two partitions. Speed at that spot would be the same ;o)
