I just bought a Pentium 4 desktop computer from Dell.
I had a third party PCI Video Frame Grabber.
It worked fine with my other PIII computer with
ASUS MB. But, it just refuse to work in the P4 computer.
Installation (software and hardware) is fine, but the
video just shows black. I call the vendor and was told
that if the MB do not support -12V then the card
will not function. Is -12V a standard spec of PCI MB?
Why Dell strip it?
Sheng
dell, compaq, gateway, and all of the other major pc sellers oftentimes have the pc's made to only work with certain parts.
anyway if its a dell you are not suppose to take off the case cover. probabally voided the warrenty by doing so.
It's funny looking at the mobo's made by those companies, they are so incredibly simplified
You'd be lucky to get 2 SDRAM slots and 3 PCI expansion ports
if you get an AGP port you are a lucky SOB

I believe the -12V is specific for P4. I read something about an additional 12V connector for P4 motherboards anyway. Don't know if that's what you're looking for.

Thanks for all the reply and advice.
It is not just the PCI card that has compatibility problem,
I have a Motion control box (for my experiment) which
has a RS232 port, and it too has compatibility problem
with the new Dell P4, while works fine with
my self-assembled PIII.
-12V is from one of the pins in the PCI slot, Dell's MB
might stripped for lower cost. But, it is said that
Dell's MB is made by ASUS as well.
DUDE! You got a Dell!
Dude!.. I'm sorry
I have a Dell - it sucks - HD is dying big time! instead of rebuilding the *ahem* 6 million dollar machine... Gonna build one - way cheaper! and third party always works!
Sorry your set up won't work.
