It isn't that hard. Some people use shims and water blocks and other stuff, that accounts for a lot of broken cores. Regular heatsinks are easy, imo.

Read this www.overclockers.com/tips120/index07.asp (http://www.overclockers.com/tips120/index07.asp) I recommend you read through the beginners guide on the front page and look through the tips & techniques also...lots of good info in there.

As far as chipping your core I would just be careful placing the hsf on the chip and ease the clip down tight. You could also buy a copper hsf better cooling and they're a little softer to  .

Hooking the clip up is always a bit nerve racking for me.

Unless you put your heatsink on the wrong way, just be careful, take your time, dont get nervous, and all should be fine. Its pretty hard to break or chip the core if your careful. If your having problems putting it on, dont force it, retry instead.

The clip on some is alot harder than others. I see from your other posts that you are putting a 1 gig/266 together if you have not ordered a heatsink yet, you may want to look into the Millennium Glaciator II. The clip is hinged and it really easy to work with. It is a top notch air cooled heatsink, that is not load, unlike some others. Just know that if you plan on using the computer for lan partys or move it around often, you should remove the Glaciator for transport.

Or get the Alpha Pal 8045 which uses the mounting bolts.

You have to put a lot of pressure with HSF's like the WBK38 but don't worry, as long as its on straight and you don't rock it it will be fine!

my advice-

use a pair of needlenose pliers....they are much sturdier to hold onto a hsf clip than the tip of a flathead screwdriver. You have more control and it won't slip off and smash through your mobo.

Put something in between the clip and the board just in case.

Although I have slipped more than once whilst pushing VERY hard and nothing was hurt except me!!!
