Well ima be bored tommorrow so i thought of a lil project... router/ap computer!

OK well i kno it can be done cus well linux is freakin baller like that, but which version of linux would be best for an older computer 2.0ghz p4 512mb of ram (ya its a lil over kill and i MAY just have to oc it to u kno get the best performance :p) n e ways which verson of linux would be somewhat easy to use and setup ( i got a lil linux kno how) and have all the right features, and also be able to use a wireless pci card to make a wireless AP.

n e ways, id thought it be pretty sweet to get a lil box as a router.

I'd definately use pfsense on that computer, It's based on FreeBSD. It has built in wireless support, multiple WAN Support, installable packages to add features, etc. etc. You can check it out here (http://www.pfsense.com/), I'm in love with it.

That's actually m0n0wall and pfsense.

DD-WRT also has an x86 version out of their software that I'm gonna try out eventually
OpenWrt also has an x86 version

I just built a Monowall unit for a customer. I used a Compact Flash to IDE adapter and a 512MB (because it was the cheapest that newegg had) Compact Flash card. Total machine cost from newegg: 200$

If you have older hardware, you might be able to just buy the compact flash adapter and a 256MB flash card. Load the machine with 256MB of ram and you'll be styling.

after using smoothwall and trying out m0n0wall, redwall, and a few others...
i prefer ipcop
m0n0wall was definately at the top of my list...if i had a CF adapter i probably would have stayed with that one

you could also use freebsd, or go with any linux and roll your own solution. Search google for natd, bind, and ipfw.

well i got pfsense workin, quite nice, easy to use, quit a bit o features. but i think ill stick with my good ole wrt54gl. maybe someday ill have a use for something like a computer that acts as a router maybe... although it did cause me to muster up all the PCI nics i have... found 4 of em... lol i have never seen a computer with so many ethernet ports... 1 on mobo, 4 in expansion...
