View Full Version : 550 strong enough?

I recently got a EVGA 8800 GTS 640 meg card.
I have an MSI Neo 4 Platinum MOBO, with Athlon X2 4200+ with 4 512 DDR Corsair DIMMs. One case fan...I plan on adding a VGA cooler I have laying around. I also am trying to overclock the 8800 GTS as EVGA's warranty supports it.
I have this power supply:
Antec TRUE550 ATX 550W Power Supply - Retail
It's been whining for a little while now...a high pitched sound that comes and goes...i'm pretty sure it's from the PSU. Is this something to worry about?
And is this power supply strong enough? I was thinking of maybe getting this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341002.
Thoughts?
Thanks for any advice :)
Matthew
With quality 550w psu it should be enough. Though I am not sure if antec qualifies for that.
Here's another suggestion for new psu. http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=373110

E6400/BFG 8800GTS 640/2GB RAM/ABIT QuadGT/1 HDD/1 DVD-RW/1 TV tunner at stock speeds in full-load needs only 160W DC from a Sirtec HPC-500-A12S V2.2 (http://www.sirtec.com/HPC-500-A12S.php).
In idle 100W DC.
I have to say no. Your Antec PSU wont hold up with that load for a long time.
I would invest in a better PSU since i dont want to see that nice vcard goes kaboom.
I suggest Corsair 620w, i just read review from Johnyguru, its a solid PSU.

How accurate is using an UPS to test load? I ran Prime95 to peg my CPU, ATITool to peg my video card, and ran multiple hard drive scans for a long time and according to APC PowerShute the UPS was only having to deliver maximum 382 Watts (mostly it was in the 366 - 374 range.) And that was including having two LCDs plugged into the UPS as well.
Seems well below my 550W.

There's two versions of the True550, the older one delivers only 24A on the +12V rail, the newer delivers 30+. If you've got the older one that only has 24A, it's not going to be sufficient.

They are very reliable in testing power draw however it does not tell you how much power each rail with draw in amps. if you have a lot of hard drives you need alot of amps on the +12v line or multiple lines.
personally i would step up and get a nice enermax liberty 620w for that rig. they are only around 130 bucks.

I checked my PSU box. Looks like mine does 30A on the +12V rail. Guess I'm good to go.

I don't know the reputation of the older Antecs but the newer model TP and SP are the ones with known issues. I would look over these two threads and do some investigating on your power supply.
I can relate directly to two failed True Power 480s within a year because of bad caps.

It's on its way to Antec heaven... you're describing one symptom of bad caps, which it almost certainly has if it's an original Truepower that's been running a while. My advice - replace or recap.

I didn't really want to replace the power supply unless it was necessary, but it sounds like you're saying it would be dangerous to continue with it. I just looked it up again and I purchased it a little under 2 1/2 years ago. I guess that's not a terribly short lifespan.
Darn these computer parts!

Not a fan of that PSU i killed 4 on them before the store gave me a corsair . But that might be a specfic prob with the Ultra-D

It's still underwarranty (3 yrs). Contact Antec support online and get an RMA.

They replaced my second TP 480 with a NEO HE 500 (Seasonic builds). They are better than the TP and SP series but still not up to a Corsair, Silverstone or a true Seasonic. It should only cost you shipping back to Antec with an RMA, their support is top notch. You can use your new one from Antec, get a better quality power suply in the interim and sell your replacment from Antec and recover some of your costs. Right now you may be sitting on a time bomb. That graphics card need a good steady stream of power.
You have some nice equipment and a top of the line graphics card, it would be a shame to have something wiped out because of a faulty power supply.

How about this power supply (OCZ 700W)? Price seems good and it got some really good reviews on some sites:

I have no experience with the OCZ, they have a good reputation. I don't remember if there are issues between the Game Stream and Power Stream OCZ models. Someone will be by with a better opinion. If you like modular, this is a great one for a single 8800 video board:

They are dead silent, pack a good punch (40 amp single 12v rail) and very affordable. Many of us have them here.
Your vid card will take ~ 12-13 amps alone so you have plenty left for anything else imaginable.
Here is a good review on the OCZ:

And here is Jonny Guru's web site and tests on many power supplies:

I like mine, but I'm not exactly pushing it with this 7600GT. I believe they're made by FSP, I haven't done it to mine but I heard if you open it up you'll find a Fortron sticker or serial number or something.
