i don't think it is, i've tried finding this out before too, and searched for information on many search engines and found nothing. I've also never seen any computer stores sell laptop cases + mobos or anything like that. But it would be pretty cool if u could build your own.

Can you even buy replacement components if something dies? Like obviously you can just order a new cpu but what about mobo etc?

I've seen ram for most kinds before kingston sells basically every kind known to exist, but it's damn expensive cause the supply isn't as high as DRAM

well, in the repair shop I worked in, we could order just about any replacement laptop part we wanted. Drives, CPUs, RAM, keyboards, all fail and have to be replaced sometimes. We could NOT order a whole new motherboard (at least our shop couldn't), and that was the problem- if you can't get a laptop mobo, you can't build a laptop. Also the screens were sort pf replaceable (cost more that just replacing the whole machine, but some folks did it cuz they were dumb) but seemed to be built to hook up to one specific kind of mobo.

So, you could get most of the pieces, maybe 75% or so but not all. I sure wish it was otherwise!:D

I heard asus is making a mobo that you can build your own laptop with. I wish there was a common laptop form factor.

Laptops are proprietary, this means that you can only get things like motherboards and cases for them from the manufacturer.
Laptop hard drives and memory can be purchased from many places.

I have been toying with building a "LAN party" computer in a case about an inch and a half tall. The only thing I can not do is battery power.

Of coarse you can but why would you want to ? I think a better solution would be a briefcase pc. I will be building one in the near future and post pics when it is done.

just my 2 cents, Billy

look if you want info. to help you please send me a personal message, I am working on a briefcase computer that has 1.0 Ghz stable p3 power, 2.0 usb, printer, scanner, video cam, dvd-read/write,and a powersupply of 12 or 16 hrs.that is smaller than a service-techs folder!! Contact me because my system is 75% finished.:burn:

If you want the details, let me know. Here in the small town that I live in now, there are people that think this is et tech. Well as a member of SETI@home, I hate to say that it is not. What makes my suitcase computer different is that it utilizes cutting edge tech. like the pentium 3 1Ghz tower that's dim. are around 6 inches by 5.75 inches by 1.75 inches and will include:370-pin processor,up to 256 meg.,10 gig harddrive,2.0 usb,Built-in expandable 16 bit to 64 bit full stereo sound with a built-in speaker. And the monitor is in color and the dimensions are-15.15 inches by14 inches by 2.46 inches thick!!!!!!

Yes it is, John has affected the world and it will never be the same. It was 21 years ago on Dec. the 7th, and now we have lost another Beatle. All things must pass, we love you George and we hope that you and John are now playing beautiful music.:)

You can't order parts from manfactures, but what you can do it go on ebay, and order junk laptops there and make your own out of parts. You can figure out your own cooling on one too. Just takes some time/research/creativity. This is the only way to make your own laptop. That I know of anyway.

You just hit the nail on the head! I have an Idea that might benifit all of us. Why don't we all put our heads together and see what kind of resources we can come up with. To me my briefcase computer is nice but to have a custom overclocked laptop, now that is sweet. We all can compare notes and come out ahead. I myself have found out where to get laptop cooling fansetups and a very nice battery add-on that will extend use up to 16 hrs. The thing is what CPU to use so as to get max. potential, is it AMD or INTEL and at that which one will be more flexable. Let us all colaborate on this one, after all that is what the forums are about right:)

The problem is not the chips or the cooling for the laptop. Those can be done. The problem comes with the motherboard. You can not buy these, except off ebay and such. You basically have to be able to find out how to get the motherboard to overclock. I am no motherboard specialist, but I would imagine this would be a great feat.

Your are right about the cooling and power but I am at odds about what CPU would best benifit a laptop. Laptops are greenpastures for me but it will not stop me from tinkering with one. I am not a mobo specialist either but I am sure someone in Overclockers.com is. What case do you sudjest is best to use?How about those old IBM notebooks that ran at about 250MHz?I would imagine the way to go would be to get a barebone case with extra USB ports.

When you think about the case, you must think fatter. The old Ibms came in both thin and fatter styles. Personally I would go with a dell case, and mod it very carefully. The reason for the fatter case is the fact that you have to put your "cooling system" in there. I am sure if I had the parts and time, I could come up with something pimp! I would first design the cooling system, so you know how much space you need to work with.

Here is an easy Idea, this could compement your custom cooling system:notebook cooler pad, Item#Z19-1058
You can check it out at www.tigerdirect.com and while you are at it check out this notebook computer, it is what I was talking about: IBM ThinkPad 760XL, Item#M975-1004
Have you seen junk cases in this modle on ebay?

What we are trying to do is build a portable overclocked laptop not a toy.:eh?:

Xbox is a computer, not a toy. Have you ever seen inside one? It has a mobo, hdd, and Vcard. They did lots of testing with different cpu's. They wanted a computer that would be quiet and aircooled so they used a PIII 700.

You can find more about Shuttle's here: http://www.shuttleonline.com/ and this system in particular: http://www.shuttleonline.com/sv24.htm

Well it is a nice atari type thingy but it will not do what is required by a laptop. It's not portable, the key word is portable besides my computer can do everything the xbox can and more. I am not dogging the xbox but it is a totaly different animal than the laptop. It was designed for a specific thing and even Bill Gates said that the xbox was not meant to replace low priced computers. If anything the xbox can be integrated into a computer overclockers liking but it is limited as far as multi-use when compared with a normal computer system as a matter of fact my comp. uses the very same type of video card technology and brand. The card was expensive but at least my computer can do everything from play games to wordprocess to play music burn music to playing and burning DVDs to recording studio to handle my home airconditioning systems and monitoring system. I may buy an xbox when the next version hits the stores, I like toys too:rolleyes:

I am getting that Zerus cooler for my laptop. BTW I am posting with it right now. You could, if the dimensions are right, take the bottom off the laptop, and use the zerus as the base. Thus providing excellent cooling. As for the IBM, I am sure that model is floating around on ebay.

Isin't that cooler cool or what, I'm getting one now for myself too. How about that old IBM notebook computer, do you think it will work or do you have an oppinion on a better one. Also what CPU do you advice I use?

The XBox's CPU doesn't even have a HSF! or fan, the G-Card has a 486 fan though, to be honest I think the XBox is to much like a PC, HDD (right above the CPU....) etc, the Gamecube will rule as its purely a GAMES CONSOLE and its cheap, I mean if you can afford an XBox then you'd already have a DVD player and such, not only tht but to use the DVD player you have to buy a ADD-ON remote for £40, RIP!

Well yeah the xbox is a basic computer set-up but I think of it as a toy, a very pricey toy. Then again my graphics card cost more than the xbox but I get more out of it. All those atari type game boxes are o.k. if all you do is play games but for the serious minded a computer is best. I get the same graphics and better sound (thanks to Audigy) than the xbox not to mention about 80gigs more in harddrive and a faster better cpu. I think however that the xbox is still in its early stages and will evolve into something quite different. Maybe it will work with MSNtv or something like that. Personaly any of us here could build a better xbox:rolleyes:
