Im sure ill get alot of dif opinions on this but im confused about wich one to get for my new computer. I already own 95,98se . and dont know if there are any benefits to getting XP or one of the others.Ive heard that some dont recognize hds or ram over a certain amount and some work better under diff. setups. Im getting a kr7a ,xp chip, maxtor 133 drive, gf2vidcard . I will be doing mediocre gaming, cd burning, word processing and alot of email and surfing. Im a newbee to computers and OS's other than windows is very foriegn to me . thanks for any help you all can give me.

if ur getting an xp chip, then go with win xp because winxp will utilize all of the functions of the chip.

With just mild gaming and more of everything else go for XP. Otherwise If you plan on doing a lot of gaming I'd go for Win 2K pro. Win 2k Pro is much faster for me then XP.

I'd suggest Win2K pro- period. Haven't used XP and don't see a need for it: it's not faster but it is more bloated.

If you want to learn a new os I've been trying RedHat Linux 7.2 out on one rig: easy install, fast. But quite a bit different than Windows.

Seeing you have teh XP chip... I would do a dual boot.... 2K PRO for all your gaming.. XP for anything else. I haven't used XP yet, but in one month I am upgrading to the IWILL XP333 and a XPathlon 1900+ chip.... and like consistancy... XP+XP+XP=FAST!

Go with XP Pro, it will easily do everything that you want to do and is much more stable than 98 or 95. It will also have better driver support than 2K does. There are also alot of tweeks that you can do to improve almost all areas of performance with XP.

Try it, you will like it :)

You will definitely like XP Pro. I've never had a BSOD, It games better than any other os I've played on, and like jw50 said, there are a ton of tweaks for it, you can completely personalize it.

What Driver conflicts does win 2K have? I've had none. Actually on my parents pc I could'nt get XP to run stable do to a driver problem with XP and his modem. Win 2K runs perfect for them.
As far as stability there's no diference. You may have better game compatibility with Win XP then Win 2k though. But if you play mostly newer PC games that should'nt be a problem either with Win 2K Pro. I chose Win 2k pro over XP cause it runs much faster for me. Only thing XP was faster at was bootup on my PC. But I will try Win XP again when I get a faster CPU and more ram. I did like some of the extra features in it. But is is pretty bloated. Takes a lot of tweaking to make it fast.

Well basically as you see Windows NT Kernal+NTFS partition is very stable and good combination as well as safe.

So basically depends if you can get 512 RAM go with Windows XP if you don't get that much or at least 384 go with windows 2000.

Multi boots are usually pretty easy: Partition your hard drive into 1 partition for each os, then install the MS os and whatever else you want. I have had up to 4 oses on 1 pc: Win98, WinNT, Linux QNX. All ran fine.
