A chinese exchange student here at the dorm asked me to help her out with her computer(everything is in Chinese). "It can't connect to the internet." she said.

I looked it over for a good two hours but I can't find anything wrong.
It's a wireless connection to the dorm's network. We have three networks, I tried them all. It establishes a connection to the router just fine, but after that it stops.
It sends out one packet every few seconds, and recieves virtually none (4 packets in about 30minutes).
It's able to view the network, and other computers on the network. It was able to access my shared folders quickly, and without any problems. (This was the only time the computer was doing any sending/recieving)

She had Intel PROset Wirless to manage her connections. I switched to Windows Wireless Manager to see if it would change anything and the result was the same.

Is this a protected network? If so, has the XP (I'm assuming XPSP2 is being used) WPA2 patch been applied?

Also, when doing an ipconfig /all, are the correct DNS servers listed?

It is an unsecured network.

The initial DNS was the same.
I'm having trouble running ipconfig to check on the rest. It runs whatever command I give it but closes before I have a chance to read the output. I have not run into this before.

Are you running it from the Run box, or an actual command prompt?

Can this laptop connect on any other networks aside from what the university provides?

It's starting to sound as though malware may have hijacked some browser settings.

As Jon said, follow these steps:

1. Click "Start"
2. Click "Run"
3. Type "CMD" and hit ENTER
4. Type "ipconfig /all" and hit ENTER

Post your results.

The dorms curfew has forced me to stop working on this until tomorrow.
I figured it out a little after I posted that. (I was using the runbox)

Do you have the DNS servers specified on the router? There should be an option on one of the administrative setup tabs. Find a computer that is directly connected to the school's network, or a computer that is connected through the router that can access the Internet, and perform the "ipconfig /all" command to find out the DNS servers' addresses. There should be a primary and a secondary.

Place those addresses in the router and see if that helps.

I switched from automatic to manual ip and gave it a IP of 192.168.1.222 (previously .15). I entered the DNS server my laptop recieves from IPconfig, but my laptop recieves no alternate, so I entered a fictious number.
It can now browse the internet, etc.

Why this fixed it, beats me. In reality the only thing that changed was the ip address. Our router seems to crash once in awhile, and I'm guessing during one of these times there was some kind of IP conflict.

Here is the printout from my ipconfig all on my working laptop. Only one DNS listed. I am not allowed to access the physical hardware.
