In All these computer magazines i keep reading that you have to register win xp within 30 days or it will stop working until you do. Now this cant be true because ive been running it unregistered for almost 2 1/2 months with no problems. Enlighten me so that i know what is up!
Thanx

Glad I could help, so much for there non-piracy thing eh?!!!
Also thanks to their privacy statement your info is never shared with them!
Also because you don't have to register you can change as much hardware as you want!!!

REGISTRATION is when you say to M$ where you live, what's your name, what comp, ...
ACTIVATION is after you change 6 or more hardware in your comp in a certain period of time. Both XP Home AND Pro have to be activated. The corporate Edition doesn't.
Registration is optional. Activation isn't. Registration gives your personal information to Microsoft.
Activation checks and makes a list of your hardware, and if you change too many, it will delete that list or something, and require you to contact M$ and ask for an Activation Key.

Just so everyone knows (and I'm sure you do already), it's still piracy if you install it on more than one system with only one license. I don't care... none of my business.
But this is one of those threads that will be pulled shortly because it condones piracy. You all might consider editing this stuff ASAP.

Remember its only for the Professional Version, the Home version HAS to be Activated.

I bought it and put it on a P200 as my system was busted and it has been on there for weeks (now i've put me back on) and on my PC it says registration is OPTIONAL and i click no i don't want to register and thats it.
It doesn't even mention activation or have the activation tab...i'm not breaking any laws im just discussing why you dont need to activate it.

Did you chagne lots of hardware in it ? Maybe you activated without knowing, or you got a Corporate Edition that M$ put in the box of a Pro ;) :D

I put it on a P200 ( I was so anxious to see if it would stop) and it didn't, then I put it on my system, I just got a NEW system for my birthday (about 2 days after putting it on my new one) and its on there, never even mentions Activation, looked in the license agreement and no nothing.
Does the corporate edition have the same Profeesional Startup screen? Or does it say corporate??
Weird! Oh well, i've got it on my new PC and thats all!!!!!!
I've changed 6 bits of hardware, I needed to do coursework so I had to use it, with a 4mb card a old sound card and a old modem etc till the new bits came: 8500 etc, put em in and fine.
Guess I got the corporate!!!! :D I ain't complaining! Whats the corporate version anyway? Same as Pro or diff?
minoukat
12-09-01, 04:18 PM
Corporate is the same as Pro, without the activation, and with a higher price. And yeah, I think the corporate has the same logon, startup and everything as the Pro.
As for the hardware change, you can change up to 6 different hardware, meaning that let's say you change your processor, you have a P3 733, and change that for a P3 800, then for a Celeron 900, then again for a P3 1GHz, it would only count as 1 change, not 3, or so I heard

Mine has been on for over 2 months and it didnt ask me to register or activate. I have a friend that owns a computer store and he sold this to me at cost. I just dont register anything I buy and dont feellike starting. I've just read that in a couple of Magazines and was wondering why mine didn't do it.

"Hacked"!!!
N'ah when I get my scanner going (week or two) I will scan an article that came with a PC mag written by Microsoft (booklet) all about XP, and in the small print it mentions that Windows Activation is only for Home edition.
I WILL POST IS as soon as my new PC arrives!

yes pro DOES need to be activated ,you may have the corporate version which is the same professional version but its for corporate situations for example'if you were a business, and you have 20 computers ,you dont want to have to activate all 20! so this way you PAY MORE like purchasing lisences and then you can do without the activation PAIN that is in the other 2 home and pro.
there is an even higher version also called "windows xp professional SELECT! thats for the BIG businesses $$$$$$$$$$
but like some1 ealse said b4,you must have this version or a miss printed or packed pro that is actually corp!
lucky b*sta*d!

Actually, I just installed XP Pro on a friends laptop. And it also has 30 days to register. The only one without that step is the Corporate version. Wich I recomend.:)

Yeah, I've had some discussion over that, and we decided we are going to use Liquid Nitrogen rather than Hydrogen as to not blow ourselves up:D

I heard 3 months not 30 days before you HAVE to activate it or it locks you out. Also ALOT of you are confusing registration and activation alot of questions would be answered if you read minoukat's reply about what each is to get this straightened out.

Then it's gotta be a corporate version. They probably just gave you a wrong oem# on accident.

If you don't activate winxp after 30 days it will run 50 minutes then restart regardless of what you do. Where I work we have two stations that are demo stations for employees to get use to winxp. When they were setup nobody bothered to activate them and they just keep rebooting every 50 minutes.

trapper you need to edit or delete your post this board in no way condones warez.
The OEM version of XP does not have to be activated because it comes with the computer and the manufacturer activates it when they build it. I believe it is some how connected in with the bios an OEM machine. If you bought it from a friend who owns a computer shop he probably sold you the OEM version which again does not have to activated.

I heard that you could change any hardware in the comp without need for a reactivation, as long as the Mobo is the same (with the OEM version). So if you change the mobo, you'll certainly have to reactivate or buy a complete version of XP
