Ok gang, this is my first post ever in the AMD CPU forum. I have a box I've been building from swapped, salvaged, and extra parts. Basically a recycled system, but I have it up and running now. It's a generic no-name motherboard from a long defunct company with an AMD K-6 266 CPU. The CPU cooler is a generic cheapie with a 50mm fan. I have lapped the heatsink and did use Arctic Silver thermal paste. I also installed an 80mm case intake fan that blows fresh air directly at the CPU cooler.

I raised the multiplier to 4.5X and the thing seems stable at 300 MHz, but of course since it hasn't cost me anything to speak of, I'm going to push it and see what it does. What should I expect it'll do? I have a 5X multiplier setting and the option of using 75 and 83 MHz FSB settings. Anyone here with K-6 experience? Is 5X75=375 a possibility?

The weird thing is that there is no jumper on the mobo voltage pins, so I don't know what voltage it's being fed.. I don't even know what voltage is default for this beast, but I have various settings available from 2.2v to 3.5v. I'm guessing if there are no jumpers, then the mobo aytomatically sets the voltage to default? Does this sound right?

Ok, in the meantime, I'm off to the CPU database to see what is entered for this CPU and then to the AMD site to see what default voltage is. Thanks in advance for any suggestions and comments.

Ok, I can get 4.5X75=337.5 (screen says 333), but it won't even post at anything higher. I found a table silk screened onto the mobo and if I'm reading it correctly, no mobo voltage jumpers means 2.2v. That sounds really low. The AMD documention I'm reading says 2.9v-3.0v with a max of 3.5v. Anyone know of another reference I can check for CPU core voltage?

Ok, looks like default voltage for the K-6 266 is indeed 2.2v as near as I can tell from my research. I have now tried raising the voltage up as far as 2.5v, but still can't get this puppy to boot at anything higher than 333 MHz. Guess it's maxed out with my current level of cooling. Oh well, good enough, I guess. Thanks for all the replies and help everyone.
