A mate is trying to install XP on his system. It gets to to GUI bit then says it Can't find a file on his CD. The file is:
D:\i386\ASMS\6000\msft\windows\common\controls\con trols.man
The file is there. You can browse to it on my 98 and 2K systems. I've checked the other directories under asms and they've all got .man files. The ones under the other dirs are 1kb, the one that it's having trouble with is 2kb.
Not sure if the problem is his CD or his computer.
He's got a original KT133 mobo with an 850 Athlon, and a 686A chip.
Any ideas...?

that is frustrating... scratches on the CD?
If it is a new CD, I would get a replacement. Can you sub another XP cd just to get that file?
Maybe try copying the whole CD onto the harddriver and install from there. I've had problems in the past with not being able to read files on the disk. Mainly due to the fact that every OS I have is on a CDR. Copying the disk over to the harddrive has almost always fixed the problem for me.

I've had similar problems with a Win98 CD. Believe it was the drive having problems reading from it at certain speeds. It's been suggested to force the drive into operating at a lower speed when installing, but as bdf said above, copying the installation into a flat directory on the HD should clear it up. (This can be done with XP, too, right?)
Yes it can be done with XP as well. But you will need to run "smartdrv.exe" off of either a Win 98 bootup disk or get it off of a Win 98 CD. Otherwise the install will take FOREVER or it will hang. You need to run it before you run the winnt.exe file.

Actually got to have a f2f with the file tonight. The file in question CONTROL.MAN is empty.
I tried looking at it in Notepad and it's 100% Blank. The others all appear to have some kind of XML-esque description of the file based on data in the .Cat file.
Don't ask me...? Could be a bad batch of CDs, a one-off balls-up or possibly a minuscule scratch on the thing...?
If anyone has a working copy of WinXP pro, could they pls either e-mail me the file ( markedmundb@lycos.com ), attach it here, or cut'n'paste the contents here, so I can get his system running before his girlfriend returns from Uni this weekend.
He says he'll phone MS up tomorrow form work, but It'll take weeks for him to get a new disc sent out, esp. with Xmas soon.
BTW, he's only got 1 WinXP CD, if there were more, then the problem would be solved.
Edited so e-mail addy is clickable

if you use this CD to install in another machine and everything is fine, the problem is his computer.
if that is the case, format the whole drive and re-install again.
otherwise, his CD.............call MS and get replacement for free.
If the file is blank it sounds like it was a problem with reproducing the CD. This is a common occurance with making copies of CDs at high speeds. Just tell him to get a new CD, in the meantime he could borrow a CD from someone to complete the installation.

I'm the one he tried to get another CD from. Shall we say, I have my sources...
But no-one I know has a copy (official or otherwise).
Anyway he phoned the place where he bought it from today who gave him M$'s number. He says he'll send it back once it's installed for a new copy. He wants to install it before the weekend, when his GF get's back from Uni, and M$ said it'd be at least two weeks for him to get a new disc without Christmas getting in the way of the post.
rUfUnky (or anyone else feeling generous), could you pls mail me it again. It didn't get through last night. TIA
