a gameplay video of my most recent revisting of half life 2, episode 1:

whoever made HL2 was careful to pay attention to the power of small details.

sure ... the shooting, blasting and jockeying are fun ... but it's the crucial, small details, which really have nothing to do with player input, that really makes the game a classic.

for instance:

in the above posted video ... probably the most telling and succinct example of such attention to detail would have to be the last 5 seconds, when there's a loud <BOOM!> sound and alex sort of reflexes and covers her face ...

i, as a player in the game, had nothing to do with that.

and yet, here's an NPC interacting in a totally organic and natural way with the surrounding environment, reacting to some event outside of my own influence or control and yet, which, regarding the gameplay as a whole ... makes a huge difference in the overall experience.

now, *that's* good game design ....

...

legendary game ...

I also agree this is the best FPS I have played to date.

I commented on the video:

"Ok, did you cheat to get those guns...cause you can't get those that early on. But I do have to agree with you, this is the best FPS I've played."

Still havent finished HL2 "on second to last level" ,nevermind episode 1, yet. gonna have to play catch up. I agree that the game is superb but i like Halo's story still, a lot.

Now I'm wanting to bust it back out and play it again

Plus I can't wait to see how it plays on my new hardware

i played through that same section again and this time there was no explosion or motion from Alex at that point ...

cool the way the programmers build in randomly occurring events like that ...

I just remembered another thing about the game and the AI. If you are in a dark place, and turn on the flashlight on near and at her, she covers her face for a few seconds.

dont need to, download steam and log in. steam has all your games registered and it can download the games as you wait (last resort, probably faster to install then patch) but its nice to know you dont need the disks.

I just got my first LCD...Samsung 205bw...20.1in Widescreen...should be here by Thursday/Friday, first thing I'm doing is blowing through HL2 on it. I feel like a kid in a candy store.

Lol, I've played HL2 on a 65" projection screen in 1080p, it looked amazing.

HL2 is pretty and all, but the storyline was less than fantastic. I don't see the obsession with Steam, it won't even let u play singleplayer until you download their updates.

In addition to all the eyecandy I think the varied gameplay is what REALLY clinches it for me. Same was with HL1. Some levels are shoot-em-up, others more puzzle oriented. Maps are all different and of course many different kinds of enemies. The story is cool too, but story is never my 1st priority on games. Xen in HL1 was a bit cheesy but I can see what the developers were going for in more varied gameplay & maps. All in all this series is #1.

Edit Cool video BTW ;)
