This might belong in GH or Internet and Networking, but seems like a software problem to me.

I've been at this over an hour now and I'm about to start throwing ****.

Trying to install a second NIC (LinkSys) in my machine. I've done this before with a Kingston and had no problems but I can't get the driver to install.

Upon loading WinME finds PCI Ethernet Controller. When it gets to loading the driver, it hangs. This happens whether I specify the location (floppy) or let the wizard find it. If I cancel before I send it to find the driver, I get into Windows okay and use Add New Hardware Wizard. Hangs here also no matter if I specify the location or allow Window to find it. I also copied the entire floppy to HD and still happens. Tried another of the same floppy, hangs. Changed slots (from 3 to 4), hangs. Removed primary NIC (DLink), hangs.

I can think of nothing else to do... besides throwing the damned thing out the window. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. :)

throwing it out the window might be right;)

Actually it sounds like it might be a bad nic: locks the pc when the driver tries to initialize the card.
You already tried taking the other nic out and it made no diff, same with changing slots so I don't think its a software conflict.

Got another nic to try? Or can that one be returned for another?
I haven't run ME, so I don't know if there might be something in there....
Good luck.

I have WinME with the Linksys NIC - works great ... sounds like the driver not the card....
I can email you a zip of my linksys drivers if you want... or try downloading new ones from linksys website

roger:

I didn't think about trying another one. I bought 3 of these last night so I have an exact match I can try... but tomorrow afternoon. This thing has ****ed me off enough tonight. :D

jbell:

I'm thinking it's probably not the driver itself. As said above, I have three of these and I tried the driver disk from one of the others, also.

The other 2 went into ME systems also with no hitch which makes me think it's not a specific ME problem, but something with software conflicts (or possibly as roger said, just a bad NIC).

I did just have another thought. The only other big difference between the software setup on this one and the others is that I have Norton installed here. Would that be interfering in some way? Forgot to mention earlier that I also tried it at default speed with no luck. And how about manually loading the driver? Can that still be done in these newer Windows versions?

disable norton and install -- Norton is not always freindly with other software!

I have alot of problems installing some things...You just need to keep trying, specifying where to look, etc. It sounds strange, but eventually I find the right match....

Like it wants to look a the D: drive, and I steer it towards the A:, but it doesn't find it, then I browse the A: and point out the directory, but still no luck, then I cancel reboot and do this again, then it works....Sorry, but that is what I have done a lot... I may even take more than that...

Woohoo!!

Disabled everything Norton and it still ran slowand eventually hung, but it hung up after it identified what it was at least. Rebooted. And all it needed then was to pull another file from the driver location. It's finally in! :D

Now if I can just figure out how to make my little network work and figure out this VNC thing, I'll end up having a good week.
