Ya, a sound card will give you better sound quality, as for performance, maybe a slight reduction in cpu usage. Ever since I got my xfi platinum, winamps cpu usage dropped from ~3% to ~1.5%, maybe a 1 fps increase in games, but thats not really why people buy soundcards.

Onboard sound is getting pretty good for music but still needs work for gaming.

If you feed music to a digital receiver through the card's digital outputs, it's quite good IMHO as long as you aren't using some cheap PC speakers.

For gaming there is limited support for EAX, etc so a dedicated gaming card might be needed.

Will a soundcard get my rear speakers to work? Because right now with my onboard sound card (ASUS Commando) they don't work.

Doesn't the ASUS Commando come with a stock SupremeFX sound card?

I was under the impression that it supported upto 7.1 channel sound.

Yes the soundcard supposedly does 7.1 but can't even get my 4.1 system to operate correctly. So I went and bought a new sound card. I should get it Monday or Tuesday.

What OS are you using?

Did you try the latest drivers from Asus site or the original chip manufacturer?

Well almost all onboard sound cards i had and have, have a weird grounding problem(i think thats what it is). They all make weird humming noises, and/or crackling poping... I got myself an x-fi and i am loving it. I heard my onboard the other day and i laughed. lol. I highly! suggest getting a soundcard. X-fi's are only 90 bucks at the egg.

I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers from the Asus website. I'm running Windows XP Pro 32 bit. I have the sound config set to "Quadraphonic Speakers".

I said screw it and bought a Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Professional Series
