Let's see. We have a Q6600 with an abit Fatal1ty FP-IN9 SLI motherboard for just $629.99 (after $20 mail-in rebate). Here's OCZ DDR2 800 2x1GB ram for $129.99 (after $25 mail-in rebate). And, here's an Antec Truepower Trio 550 watt power supply for $59.99. I might have to get a couple of those!

That's ~$865 plus 8.25% tax = ~$936.36. Minus the $45 in rebates (assuming you actually get them) leaves us with ~$891.36 (with no HD or vid card).

Or, I could go with the E6600 plus an ECS PT890T-A for just $229.99 (with no mail-in rebate) and pray the the mobo works. In fact, I could get 2 of those (with 2x1GB ram for both) for less than the quad with ram. :D :D :D

I think an expensive mobo hoping for a high oc on a q6600 is a waste of money if primary goal is folding. To get a q6600 folding stable over 3.0 will need very good cooling, maybe only with water? It depends a lot on how low a VC the cpu needs to oc. If you can get 2 E6600 rigs with some oc for the price of 1 top of the line Q6600, you will get better production from the 2 E6600 rigs.

If there has been a breakthrough in getting the quads like Q6600 to a high (~3.5) folding oc, please let me know! I have only seen speeds like that on well cooled QX6700's.

/edit Ned if you need help OC'ing a quad & setting up linux for the contest LMK i will help as much as i can. I am not familiar with the nvidia chipset mobos though, but there are some threads around on them.

Thank you. That's a very generous offer. I have no linux experience.

But, I decided to go with the e6600 instead of the quad. Are you still willing to help??? :D

I, and i am sure others will help.

I am by no means a guru on linux ... but for basic folding setup I and others will be able to help you through it.

Leelegends beginners guide, and adak's guide should help.

In my epxerience so far the biggest issue i have had is getting the right ubuntu level to install properly with each mobo. The 3 flavours in most use around here are ubuntu 6.06, 6.10 and 7.04 (beta still). MY asus and gigabyte rigs are all running on 6.06 and 6.10.

The challenge about getting a distro to install is basically having one with the right drivers for your hardware. So if your mobo doesn't have the latest nic chips and video, then 6.06 or 6.10 should work fine. I have used only sata HDD's, but i think adak's thread talks about IDE. I use the same ide cd drive for all my installs (i only plug it in when installing in my caseless rigs). I had problems with one of my other cd drives.

Since there is no plug and play in ubuntu, once i get a config working, i don't change the hardware. When i have made changes (eg vidoe card) I find it fastest to just reinstall rather than try to figure out how to manually install drivers. I am still a linux noob :o The good news is the install is a lot faster than windows.

For example, on the latest rev of the ds3, gigabyte used a newer nic chip that wasn't supported, so i put an old pci nic with a realtek chip in the rigs and install then worked fine with 6.10. 6.06 and 7.04 wouldn't install for me on it. I also have a rev 1 ds3 and it installed fine with 6.10 on my first try.

So one of the things you should do to get prep'ed is to download all three version so you have them handy to try out. Make sure you get the 64 bit versions!!!! They say AMD on them but they also suppport c2d in the fine print.

The existing smp threads have the links i beleive.

pscout, 7.04 is released (4/19).

What I have found with 7.04 on DS3 is that I coudn't get any PCI-E video card to work. I had to use regular PCI video. Also 2nd PCI slot doesn't seem to work with 7.04.

I couldn't resist no matter how hard I tried...picked up a e6600/ecs combo, now I can pad mod the e4400 to 1066fsb and run it in the ecs board and now I gots me a e6600 in my main rig

Thanks Dave ... i just realized today that it was now the current release. :o

I may give it another go on the current rev ds3's. It is a pita to have to put another nic in the mobo. I am pretty sure I had tried it with a plain old pci video but who knows

I don't know much about ebay, but it seems the E6600 is getting cheaper everywhere. I just pulled the trigger on a E6600 from NewEgg,($232 USD), I think they are even cheaper (a couple $'s) at Zoom bug ($230 + free shipping) I'll bet (of course ole' lazy me didn't :bang head ) if you look around the "Net" you can get them even cheaper. I wonder if the rumor is true they are binning(SP) the better E6600's for the Q6600 because they need to build a stock up for the Q3 price cuts? I sure hope whatever batch I get it'll at least clock to 3.0 GHz stable for 24/7 folding  Just off the wall how much are they on ebay compared to how much they were? :eh?:

ebay 6600's seem to be going in the 220's now. If you can get the same through an etailer it is prolly a better deal and makes waranty less of on issue.

And i have watched a few 6420's looking for buy it now's around the same price but not selling. Less ebay supply of 6420 so far i guess.

For me in canuck land, most of the cheap US etailers don't sell to canada
so i watch ebay for sometimes price advantages vs our generally higher retail costs here after 14% tax. Although oftimes on xborder buys i still get dinged on tax depending how shipped and declared. Some sellers charge a lot more to ship here than others.

6600's have been a fair bit higher here at retail but some retailers are coming down faster than others now.
