After installing an 80mm intake fan (32cfm), my temps dropped an average of 5 degrees celsius! Amazing. I didnt know that an intake fan had such a dramatic impact on the temperature of my cpu. Previous to installing the intake fan, my temps were 37c idle and 48c load. Now its 33c when idle and 42c load. (ambient at 31c).
Heartened by the success, I plan to put another 80mm as an exhaust.
Before the question, here's the relevant info -
Cele667@900 (1.9v)
Thermaltake VOlcano 6 cu+ and AS II
one (1) 80x80x25mm intake fan (uses 1.8 watts and 150mA (max))
stock intel fan used as exhaust (dont know how many watts it consumes)
256mb PC-133
Geforce2 GTS 32mb
Soundblaster live value
Ethernet card
20 gig Maxtor HD
4 gig Seagate HD
Samsung CD-ROm
- all drawing power from a cheap 230 PSU -

my question - can i still add another 80mm fan using the same PSU? can it still handle it? What happens if I use more power than what the PSU can spit out?
Im not adept at electrical stuff, hence this query. THanks for any input.

A standard 80mm fan draws about 1-2W of power, not enough to cause problems with you PSU.

Back when I had a wimpy 235 watt PSU, I knew there were too many fans and drives because under heavy load I could actually hear my fans drop in RPM. Since I got my new 300 watt PSU, that no longer happens. But I had 8 fans going at the time too (including video and northbridge coolers). Only a couple extra fans should be fine.

Under load your fans should speed up actually. As the PSU becomes loaded the 5V line tends to drop and the 12V line tends to rise.
As for too many fans, unless you had a lot of high power fans then they weren't the problem. For standard case fans, 1 HDD = 12 fans roughly, lots of drives is the main issue with lack of 12V power. I used to run 10 fans off a 230W without any issues at all.

9 fans running on a 250 with raised vcore and all. No problems. I agree, not fan draw.
