I'm trying to trouble shoot some hosting problems and I need a port scanner for scanning my own computer to see which ports are open. Any kind will work, even the web page ones, but I was hoping someone here has a particular program they might recommend to me for such a task. I prefer one that is not an installer if possible.

Also if anyone knows of any good packet sniffing software, that would probably help me out as well.

ありがとう!

I know grc.com has a port scanner. Not to sure on the packet sniffer though. Sorry.

If you need to know what ports your system is listening on, try running a 'netstat -an' in a command prompt. That will give you a basic idea of what connections are currently active on your system, as well as what ports your system is listening on. Your firewall may also provide some insight in to what is allowed inbound/outbound.

As for a packet sniffer, take a look at Wireshark (http://www.wireshark.org) (formerly known as Ethereal).

Ethereal (or I think its called Wireshark now) is a good packet sniffer.

Thanks for the resources! Looks like I'll give etherreal a try, but before that, I'll try grc.com since it is probably easier to work with, and may be all I need. :)

Hi Buddy,

Nmap is a well known program for port scanning for years. Give it a try but it really shine in Linux environment but they got windows platform support too. Now they as known as Nsecure. (http://insecure.org/)
