View Full Version : Probably buying a PS3 this weekend, couple questions

I'm wondering who's got the best extended warranty program for when I buy it. Looking for US retailers this time as they're cheaper in the US and I'm going to Buffalo this weekend anyway. Not buying online, because I NEED to purchase the extended warranty.
I REALLY wish I could find someplace with 20GB models as that would save $100.
What component cables are best? I heard the standard PS2 ones work fine.
Just to reiterate something. It will play movies in 1080i and not downscale them to 480p, right?

But Fudge... isn't Sony going out of business in a week or something? :)
Get EB's warranty. You have a year or two and you can walk into any EB and walk out with another one. (Check to see if Gamestop will continue supporting EB warranties though...)

1. The best extended warranties would come from warehouse stores such as Sam's Club, Costco, or BJs. Often times they are much easier to deal with than a store like Best Buy. The downside is that these stores require memberships, so they may not be in your favor.
2. Component cables are component cables. If you have existing ones from your PS2 you should be fine.
3. The PS3 only downscales if your HDTV does not support a particular resolution. For example, if your TV does not support 720p natively, know that many PS3 games will be scaled down to 480p. If your HDTV supports 720p and 1080i then you're in good shape.

well since component is an analog signal the cable quality does matter, but there is no sense in spending a ridiculous amount of money as the ps2 component cables work just fine. that's what i use on my ps3.
as far as downscaling, it really depends on the game as deception said. some games will use 480p over 1080i if your tv does not support 720p, and then some games will use 1080i if you cannot display 720p. you can also attempt to trick it into always using 1080i by just disabling the 480p resolution from the video settings, but sometimes this will backfire on you and it will use 480i, heh.

i thought it was common knowledge that extended warranties are a huge rip off?
maybe not so with consoles, but i haven't heard of any ps3's dying...have there been problems with that?

Yeah. I didn't know Fudge didn't have 720p (who doesn't have 720p these days?)
Just use 1080i. I mean there's no point in getting expensive component cables anyway if you can't even do 1080p. Does your TV do HDMI? (You really should catch one of those Microcenter deals. That's where I got my TV.)

I would do some more searching on this before you buy a PS3 then. I think the PS3's internal scaler is a big issue for someone such as yourself -who owns an HDTV but lacks one of the key resolutions. I would not want to shell out big bucs on any system just to have my content downscaled.
Perhaps a jump to some PS3 forums might give you a better perspective.

The main reason he's buying a PS3 is for the bluray player (he already has an HD-DVD drive on the 360). It makes more sense for him to pay a hundred extra bucks and have a video game system (that folds!) than to get a stand-alone player.

I've looked there and just found a bunch of bickering. The general consensus I guess is that it'll play BluRay movies in 1080i. I don't know or care too much about the games.

I'll eventually get an LCD with 1080p and HDMI, but it's going to be at least 47" as I hate to go any smaller when I'm used to my 51".

Truthfully when you get the 1080 u'll notice the difference. Even if it is smaller. I went from a 52 to a 46 Bravia XBR3 and LOVE THE BRAVIA more. Quality is SO MUCH BETTER.

Got my PS3 connected to a 46" Bravia XBR3 as well. The 1080p picture quality is simply stunning. Watched the new Bond movie on Bluray this weekend was was amazed how it makes images look so 3D.
Upgrade your TV Fudge, you wont be disappointed.

Warranty wise this is a personal preference thing. It comes with a 1 year warranty and I personally choose to extend that to two years at Wal-Mart as they have been good to me warranty wise in the past.
Cable wise I would just get some off of Ebay. I got my HDMI-DVI cable with 24K gold connections for 4 bucks with shipping on there and it's the same quality as my 60$ monster DVI cable.
This one I am not positive on as my TV will not tell you what resolution it's running in. However, I believe that games will be downscaled to 480P while movies will play at 1080I. Also Sony about a month ago did acknowledge this issue so hopefully in a Firmware update in the near future we will see a fix for this.

you are correct, it will play bluray in 1080i if you do not have 720/1080p. our tv only supports 480 in progressive, and when i watch bluray movies it chooses 1080i.

depends on the game, some choose 480p over 1080i which is lame, and some choose 1080i.

Man... You guys got weird TVs... I just got what I thought was an ol' cheapo Spectre from Micro Center... but it tells me what resolution I'm at (via the "info" button) has HDMI, VGA, SVIDEO, 2 Components... and a hell of a lot of other stuff (including both minijack and digital connections for connecting my PC), and does 720p/1080i. I frankly wasn't expecting half the features I got... and certainly not on sale for $500 after rebate (which I got in a timely fashion.)
Now to get back to the U.S. so I can see it...

Wow sounds decent. My Mitsu for some reason always tells me that I am at 1080P when I am on my PS3. Whether it be movies or games. The weird thing tho. When im on my 360. It switches and tells me whatever the resolution of the game is. I.E. (R6V runs at 720p) the TV will say 720Pu. Meaning 720P upscaled. Weird huh? Now i just use my projector for the 360 and my TV for my PS3.

I already told you Fudge: EB's warranty. I questioned the guy thoroughly, and he said if anything at all was wrong with my 360 there would be no repair phase, no waiting for results, they would go straight to the back, get a new one, and hand it to me.

EXACTLY! I may even give them all my old PS2 stuff in trade if it's worth it. I've been thinking about getting a slimline anyway because even though I collect consoles, my big brick PS2 is most definately not going to work 20 years from now like all my other consoles that old do.

Mine will. :)
I've got a gigantic hard drive sitting in it. And if that HD dies twenty years from now (it still has at least 2 years left in the warranty) I'll go to a "vintage" used PC shop and get another one.

First of all, WELCOME TO THE PS3 FAMILY...... in a few days.
I stopped by EB/Gamestop and they have a poster up showing $100 tradein value for a PS2 if you purchase a PS3 from them. So, they do have this offer. As for warranty, ALWAYS READ THE FINE PRINT. Don't trust everything the sale's person tells you. Sometimes they exaggrate their claim on the warranty. If something goes wrong, there is a list of criteria your problem item has to comply to before they will replace it.
FYI, extended warranty from BB is a definitely no no.

I downloaded F@H, downloaded the system updates and am in the process of downloading MotoStorm and GT-HD. I wish it wasn't, but it's like the 360 in the fact that it suspends downloads while watching movies.
I HATE using the Six-Axis as the DVD/BluRay controller, it sucks. I NEED to get a decent remote for it.
I just watched X-Men3, I LIKE the fact that all the BluRay boxes list the encoding method on the back. This was I was sure not to get one that was Mpeg2 as those hardly differ at all from the DVDs. The X-Men3 BluRay disc is FAR superior to the DVD even through my upscaled DVD player.
The easy touch eject and power buttons remind me a bit of the touch sensitive controlls on the iPod.
Black sucks, this thing is going to get dirty and dusty BAD and QUICK.
Even though the fans aren't as loud, this thing puts out A LOT of heat from the back vents. I hope it doesn't warp, melt my upscaling DVD player it's on top of or the optical audio cable (it IS that HOT).
Like the 360, it didn't want to connect to my Linksys SRX400 wireess router, so I had to connect it to my Buffalo Wireless bridge. So far, the Wii, the PC and the MAC are the only things that connected flawlessly to the Linksys SRX400. The 360, PS3 and DS Lite just don't like it.
I bought a cool MadCatz, multi-connector that lets me connect both the 360 and the PS3 at the same time to one component input on the TV and it was only $15, good deal!!

I just thought of another question. I'm going to try a few PS2 games in it in a few minutes, but how do I know if I got one with the PS2 chips in it or one th at runs off of software emulation?
FudgeNuggets
05-05-07, 11:39 PM
Okay, I must have one with a PS2 chip in it as a threw 3 PS2 games at it and it played them in 480p without a hiccup.
Now a serious issue. I player MotorStorm and it LOOKED LIKE CRAP because it forced it into 480p mode even though I have only 1080i enables in the video settings.
Gran Turismo HD however played at 1080i flawlessly and looked nice.
How the hell do I know in advance which games are going to go 480p or will play in 1080i. As I've said before my HDTV has 3 modes, 480i/480p/1080i so it does not have 1080p or 720p.
If it comes down to it, I'll just avoid games altogether for the PS3 and go 360 all the way for gaming.

Guess I will just try to answer what I am seeing as questions in the order they are listed.
1. Yes, the polished black does show a lot of dust. These (http://www.decalgirl.com/browse.cfm/2,232.htm) may interest you as they will cover the black. Also the Cover itself is removable so you can wash it if you ever need. There is speculation that the cover can be removed as Sony will have different ones to choose from in the future but so far nothing has been confirmed.
2. I seriously doubt anything will warp or melt due to the heat. I am not sure how hot your unit is running as there are currently different fans throughout the models, though if it is anything like mine you should be fine. Also if the heat was that bad chances are the PS3 itself would warp.
3. Not sure on your router. I am currently using a WRT54GL with my PS3 and everything has been working just fine.
4. NA PS3 are currently still hardware based emulation. However, the Software based PS3s are already near 80% emulation so odds are your games would work either way.
5. Upscaling is a developers choice as it stands. Motorstorm is a 720P game and currently there has not been released a patch to upscale it to 1080I. A new trend among game developers seems though to be either support 1080i from the start or release a patch to support it. So as these patches are released and more and more games become 1080P native this issue should hopefully go away. As it stands now though you should be OK with most new games, it is the launch titles that you will have issues with.

Does it only connect two devices?
I'll never need another connector again. I've got two components, two composites, two S-video one VGA and one HDMI. If I got a PS3 I'd probably connect it to the HDMI input.
Get a new router. Something like the WRT54GL. I've got a version 2.0 54G. They suck in terms of maximum simultaneous connections but they're great with modified firmware. I've connected the 360, PS2, DS, and PSP with absolutely no problem. (Plus the damned thing only costs fifty bucks.)
How'd the PS2 games go?
FudgeNuggets

The PS2 games worked fine Rainman. I'm not concerned about the router because the Buffalo I've got right next to it has 4 inputs and all I've got on it now are the 360 and PS3. My TV has 2 coaxial inputs, 4 composite inputs, 5 s-video inputs and 2 component inputs.

Seriously, how do I tell if a game is going to display in 480p or 1080i? I just downloaded the F1 demo and it was in 480p, so MotoStorm and F1 is in 480p and Grand Turismo HD is in 1080i. I was going to go rent Spiderman3 but if it's going to be in 48-p then I'll jsut get it for the 360 where I KNOW it'll display in 1080i (and believ me the difference is HUGE . )

As I was saying Fudge upscaling is based upon the game. So if the Box says 720P then it will only do 720P. The issue with these early games is Sony did not even announce to developers the PS3 had a scaler until January for some odd reason. Meaning all games made before or during that time would be based upon the mindset that the developers would have to software scale their own games. As said, Sony did unveil the hardware scaler in January, however, even then they only showed developers how to use it for Horizontal scaling. As such the question switched from "Does the PS3 have a scaler?" to "Does the PS3 have a Vertical and Horizontal scaler?" which has yet to of been answered. On it's own the Horizontal scaler cannot do 720P to 1080I upscaling, though it can drastically help in the process. Anyway here is a much more detailed and in-depth article about it.
http://www.beyond3d.com/content/articles/16/1
Also Fudge, DScaler (http://deinterlace.sourceforge.net/about.htm) a scaler that runs on Windows may be able to help you if you throw a TV Capture card in the AMD system of yours. I am actually considering it for myself but first I am just trying to figure out of my old 2.4Ghz Intel can handle it and if so how much a decent supported TV Tuner is.

the majority of us. The reason HD only broadcasting keeps getting pushed back year after year is because for hte majority of americans, HDTV is still very much a luxury item, not a regular item.
I mean, why spend 1500 on a TV when for the same amount, I can build a computer capable of HD, or buy myself a used car that is in great shape?

Precisely. I spent exactly $500 on my HDTV last Christmas. It's also 32".
That's standard tv pricing... or maybe just a little bit more for a lot more product. Came with three different tuners as a matter of fact. And, truth be told, they shouldn't even be SELLING standard def tvs anymore if they want to switch all broadcasting to HDTV.

The majority of Americans don't buy $1500 cars and don't use the computer for more than internet and email.
Most Americans do, however, log many, many, many hours in front of the TV which makes it more worth while to have a nice TV. Although, I don't think the masses have been given a good enough reason to move to HD.
Eventually HD-DVD or Bluray will really catch on and HD there will be more HD channels available. Once again the video game market is pushing new technology forward until the mainstream catches up.
ps My HDTV is easily the best purchase I've made in years. I just can't watch sports in SD anymore (if theres a choice) and everything looks better on a bigger screen. Skip a year of PC upgrades and get the TV:drool:

Im simply confused. Who sells HDTVs that only display 480i/p and 1080i? Thats a new one to me. As far as I know, HTDVs were released 480i/p + 720p. Eventually it made its way to 480i/p + 720p + 1080i. Finally made it to 480i/p + 720p + 1080i/p. Who doesnt have 720p on an HDTV?
Just curious, as this sounds like a very weird combination.

I've had it for over 5 years. As I've said I'm alwasy on the cutting edge. Early adopter baby. It's a 51" Panasonic projection HDTV. It's just like this one, but 51" instead of 47

Actually, 1080i was a prevalent standard in TV sets long before 720p. 720p has only become very common since LCD flat panel sets and LCD rear projection sets have become common. When the majority of HDTV's were CRT and CRT rear projection, 1080i was "HDTV" for most people. 720p was mostly only available with $10,000 plasma screens.
Manufacturers typically skimped on the electronics and did not offer 720p as a display mode in CRT based equipment.
Since TV broadcast was in 1080i, and consoles eren't out yet, it probably made sense. I hope you enjoy it for folding, I don't think you needed the warrenty, there have been very few instances of PS3's breaking, mine has been folding for over 22 days straight or something, and it's not even hot. It's pretty much summer here in Southern California.

Mine was hot as hell from the moment I turned it on. I got the warranty because I fully expect the BluRay drive to crap out in just over a year, that was the way it went with my PS1, PS2 and 360.

I honestly hope it doesnt, but I can say I have never had a console give me problems in my life other than the typical old Nintendo "blow in the cartridge while standing on one foot" trick to get the game to play. I know there were some PS2 issues, but mine ran from first release until I dropped in my PS3 a few months ago.
I think you've had some particular bad luck, my friend!
PS. Upgrade your TV! ;)

Yeah Surf, but me and a couple million others have had this "bad luck". I own 30 consoles and those 3 are the only ones to have given me problems. Some want to blame it on the CD/DVD technology but my Saturn, Sega CD and DreamCast all work flawlessly still.
