I am looking to upgrade my sound solution (going to keep my sexy z5300 5.1 speakers) I have an audigy 1 modded to an audigy 4 pro, but I want to run vista and I don't believe the mod will work in vista...
Whats a good gaming sound card that can rival my audigy 1 moded? I don't want to break the bank though.....I am looking for good sound and great performance

XFi fatal1ties are supposed to be good. Actually, all of them are supposed to be good.

All the x-fi's are good...but I would avoid the extreme audio version, it doesn't have the DSP that all the other X-fi's have, it does it through software.
Pretty much if you want good sound in vista, you should get the x-fi, since it's the only card that's really supported (at least by creative, not sure about other companies)

ouch $90...you think I will be able to notice a huge difference in performance/sound over my audigy 4pro modded audigy 1 in pure D gaming environments...whats DSP?
How does the xtreme gamer fair? Compared to the "full" fatal1ty?
EDIT
*would all of the x-fi card enable me to have dolby 5.1 headphone technology on regular stereo headphones!?*

I'm not really sure how your aud1 would compare...I'd venture to guess it would be a noticeable difference. I have an X-fi platinum paired with z5300e's and they sound great.
As far as the headphones, I don't think the X-fi's actually have the Dolby 5.1 headphone tech or rating or whatever it is...but they do have a very good 3D positioning setup for headphones using creative's CMSS-3D. I use it all the time with my headphones and it does an excellent job. I actually have my z5300's setup in the right way (with the rear speakers behind me) and I have no problem using my Sennheiser EH150's when I play games because the 3D is almost as good, not quite but almost.
Oh and yeah, I think the Xtreme Gamer would be fine. I am pretty sure it has the same DSP as the good X-fi's, just lacking in a few of the more advanced features...but it'll hook up to your z5300's just fine. And should sound just as good as the Fatality cards.
You could also check out eBay...I got my X-Fi platinum for $70 on eBay. You could also look for the XtremeMusic version, It's the same card you get with the Platinum package, just without the front bay dealie.
