Bet you want to know my secret, don't you? Don't you?
On my laptop I've done some experimenting, and it turns out on a 2609, its 3 minutes faster a frame if I run straight from the CLI, no xserver started.
As soon as I get wifi working in Gentoo I'll post up the fahlog. But if a 1.86GHz merom can gain 3 frames a minute on a 2609..what can others gain? I'll try this on my desktop as soon as I get laptop squared away.
Howto:
Gnome:
to stop the xsever/gnome once, to test this. Type this into the terminal:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
If you like what you see, to always boot to the CLI,
sudo update-rc.d -f gdm remove
The later removes starting gdm (Gnome Desktop Manager). Once you do this you will always boot to a login screen. To start the Gnome back up,
startx
or
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
KDE:
to stop the xsever/KDE once, to test this. Type this into the terminal:
sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop
If you like what you see, to always boot to the CLI,
sudo update-rc.d -f kdm remove
The later removes starting kdm (KDE Desktop Manager). Once you do this you will always boot to a login screen. To start the KDE back up,
startx
or
sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start

That just makes good sense; could you do a brief walk-thru on that?
For headless folders that currently run in GUI, I presume SSH or putty would first have to be set up with keyboard and monitor attached?

Turn Off GDM: $ sudo mv /etc/rc2.d/S13gdm /etc/rc2.d/s13gdm
Turn On GDM: $ sudo mv /etc/rc2.d/s13gdm /etc/rc2.d/S13gdm
Note: This should only work for Ubuntu (Gnome). But Kubuntu should have a similar method using KDM in lieu of GDM.
Got one running text only now... we'll see if it effects my frame times. :)

Yeah, if you run headless, and I assume via VNC? then just VNC in and install ssh (openssh). Make sure to install ssh server (opensshd) too!

Yes, am using VNC right now. Hmmm, might be easier than I thought...can't wait to get off work and try the setup! ;)
Your Gentoo install may give me the courage to try the same.:)

Folding@Home Client ,
As you can see with frames 1-14 my times were around 27.5, 28 minutes, average. Then 15-21 which is inside Gnome, the average tpf is 29-29.5...
Ok so after typing "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop" in a new terminal other then the one thats running the client.
The screen goes blank and I am left with a blinking cursor. How do I get my screen back?
Its Ubuntu 6.10 the PC still seems to be running.
Ok lol that wasn't right lol I am left with a blank screen and no commands work. Guess I'll do a cold reboot.:(

After you issue the stop command, try doing "alt" + "crtl" + "F1".
davekusa, not sure. I haven't used Feisty. Which command did you try? Maybe try harlam's solution?

Shel,
most of us are using Ubuntu. (a good amount of peeps)
forgicve me, I've been up too many hours and nothing makes sence right now,
but could you post up or pm those requesting, a WT for unbuntu please?
Thanks,

hey this is what the headless diskless folding looks like if you connect a screen to it which from what ghetto said for him it was faster too
OK I am such a noob, it took a while but here is a way it worked for me. Ubuntu 6.10 edgy eft
Control c the client.
Then use
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop In a terminal box.
If your screen will not take commands hit the "alt" + "crtl" + "F1". as Shel says
When you get to the $ Use the arrow keys to bring up your commands for starting the client, start it either this way or by memory or whatever.
Shel I am not sure if this is how you mean it to work , but for us noobs we need every step spelled out. :)
Once you do it you end up hitting yourself in the head..and saying its so simple.:bang head
I'll be able to check my times shortly. Oh and then when you need the desktop the startx command worked..but not every time.
I had to cold boot a couple of times before I figured it out.

Ok...I'll look into this. I wonder why my TPF dropped some.
I wonder if there is some programs still running in Ubuntu that are running in my Gentoo install...mainly because I boot straight to CLI, and don't even start X.
would someone do me a favor?
Run the following to commands,
ps -A >>gdm.txt
and
ps -A >>cli.txt
Run the first one on the desktop, and the second one after you stop gdm and are at the command line (cli).
What those commands do is list all the process running, and the >>gdm.txt save the list to the file gdm.txt. So if someone would be willing to do this, than I can see what is running that doesn't need to be at the CLI, and maybe come up with a script for ya...and improve those TPF ever so...Maybe not..

And now a question for us "intellect challenged". I have a "case less" E6300 folding 24/7 on my DSL network, but with it's own monitor, keyboard and mouse. Would this operation work for it and if it would, can someone please give me a "step by step" on how to do it? I'm "intellect challenged" and still not too cool in Linux. :eh?:

It will work, I'll post a step by step when I get home, I have to go run some errands right now.
I'm not sure if you'll gain any ppd though, as it seems that when you close Gnome, the only thing you are closing is Gnome..

@ D: thanx dfonda, I went and reread the post and low and behold the things already stated would probably answer my questions (I tol ya I was "intellect challenged")
@ Shelnutt2: you already do so much to help us "newbs" to OC'ing and folding it would probably be redundant to write another step x step. If I'd get off my sometimes dead "arse" (I like that word "arse") and read the simple instructions you already supplied I could probably do it.
I think these people, among many others, are at the heart of what makes Team 32 the best folding team on the "Net" and what keeps the Overclockers.com forum clicking.
