So I found this on zzf
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=100829&ps=ho6
I have a toshiba 60gb 5400 rpm drive right now. TOSHIBA MK6032GSX is the model number. (I would think something like this one http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=81820000000700000001000065980000151 6/818200000aff000000010000659c000026ad/818200000192000000010000659c0000279f/818200000d31000000010000659c00002ef8/818200000d38000000010000659c00002f06 )
Do you think i would see a big improvement if I got this new drive? Laptop specs are 1.83 core duo with 1.5 gigs of ram.

Yeah, that would be a nice improvement... 7200rpm makes a difference if you use a lot of big files.

Ya, I say it would be an improvement also. With that laptop, a 5k4 hdd doesnt seem right. plus 40gb extra storage is always good.
You'll see noticeable performance gains across the board with a 7200RPM drive. It's the best $94.99 you'll ever spend for your laptop.

Why do they even still put 5400RPM in lappies..

Mostly for power saving. But maybe also because in a tower you have decent airflow but in a laptop its pretty much wrapped in plastic.

hmm i wonder how much of a difference this hdd would have on power comsumption. Performance gains will mean nothing to me if it cuts my battery life in half or something crazy.
Ok for seeking the hitachi consumes 2.7w while the toshiba consumes 2.4w. On read/write it is 2.3w to 2.0w respectively. Now here is the big thing. Idle consumes 2.1w on the hitachi while consuming only 0.9w. but standby is equal at .25w each. Do I need to be worried about these differences? How much wattage does a proc consume?

If you want a speed improvement now, go with the 7200rpm drive. If you can hold off, SSD are coming and hybrid ones also, just would have to wait a little while for prices not to be sky high. The performance/power usage ratio should be quite a bit better than that 7200rpm drive.
The big question. How much idling would you be doing while on the battery? Alot? Then stay away from the upgrade. Very very little? Then go for it...or wait for SSD/Hybrids.

I addressed this issue in the past here (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=477250) and here. (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=454521)
In most applications (uses) the improved seek and transfer times result in less time that the drive is active, hence, lower or equal overall power consumption when compared to a 5400RPM drive.

but some of the larger 5400 drives are comparative with 7200 drives now, like the 160g or not?
also 5400 drives are cheaper, so it keeps the cost of the laptop down in production and most people wont notice the diff.
but some of the larger 5400 drives are comparative with 7200 drives now, like the 160g or not?...
Comparable (I'm assuming you meant comparable, rather than comparative ) in what way, Mr.Guv? Could you please elaborate?

so what would be a good program to use to mirror my current 60gb laptop drive over to my new 100gb. I really dont want to have to reformat.... By the way it is a lenovo x60 if that makes a difference (it might due to some protection function or something)

Acronis True Image (http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/) is highly recommended.

so i am trying to use acronis. This is tough though. My laptop hdd is sata. So I figured I could just hook it and the new hdd up to my desktop via sata and just clone my old drive to my new drive. But alas! I cannot do that. Windows will not boot if I have my old laptop hdd connected to it. So what I am doing now is I have the old hdd in my laptop again. I hooked up a 500gig external and now I am creating a full backup archive. Then I will take the external and hook it up to my main computer and restore the backup to the new hdd and put that one into the lappie and see if it works. If anyone sees a flaw in logic here or has a better idea I welcome it.

I build laptops with both of those drives all day long. The Hitachi 7200s are definitely an increase in performance. However, I have notice a slight decrease in reliability. That is, the Hitachi's perform better but aren't as reliable as the Toshibas.

for some reason i recall hearing the new 160g drives at 5400 RPM are pretty decent due to the denser platters, of course now i cant find this info.
i think is kind of like raptor vs seagate 7200.10
in raw seek time the 7200 is faster, but things like larger file transfer speeds are close or better for the larger drives...

still couldnt get the hdd image thing to work. Anyone have any ideas?
First I always use Acronis for cloning. Second I bought a cheap 2.5 extrernal hd enclosure USB and then cloned the old to the new. After that I just slapped the new HD in and it works fine. I keep the original HD in the safe with the clone of my main system.
I never had a failed clone job with Acronis.
went to a 7200 Seagate and performance is noticable but power consumption seems a bit higher.

I might have to buy a enclosure then. This sucks. I was hoping to get this thing going today. Grrrr. I wish I could hotplug my stupid laptop drive.

ok so i just got this enclosure http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817387023 and I cant get it to work. It doesnt have the 5v connector included but instead has a dual usb connector that is supposed to power the whole thing. I have plugged everything in and nothing happens. Cant really feel the drive at all and the led should light up signifying that its running but it doesnt....
