yea i got an xp boot disk and when i boot up is says a:\> so i type d:\ and hit enter, then i type setup and it says that this program cannot be run under ms dos mode. im trying to install win 2k pro. how do i do it? and when i try booting it form the cd rom it wount work either!!
p.s. why the hell did ms have to get rid of dos!!!
I don't understand why you can't boot from the disk. It is a Bootable disk I would know. Otherwise you can make the Bootup floppy disks. It will take 4 of them. Then make sure the CD is in the rom and boot from the Win 2K bootup floppy disks. You will not be able to install win2K from a dos prompt like you can with Win XP or win 98. Besedes you don't use the setup.exe anyway. You have to run the "winnt.exe" in the 386 dir. You can email me if you have any questions.

So it won't boot from the CD? That is weird. You set it in the bios, right? Then what happens?
OK First of all you cannot, CANNOT run the Windows NT Kernal(Win2K and Windows XP Pro) in dos which is like running from Windows 98 Bootdisk.
You will need to use the 6 disk Windows XP bootdisk or the 4disk Windows 2K depending which one you want to install.
Yes you can run Win XP from a dos prompt. All you need to do is get into the I386 folder and run the "winnt.exe". That will start the install for win XP in dos. I've done it several times. I have not been able to do this with Win 2K pro though. But then again last time I tried was with a messed up disk. I havent tried it with the one I have now. You do need to run "smartdrv.exe" first once you get to a dos prompt before you start the install. Other the install will either hang or take FOREVER! this would be on a win 98 bootup disk or the win98 CD. But yes it can be done.
