View Full Version : ... Why is my GF3 so slow?

I've got an original GeForce3 (VisionTek) and an Athlon 1400.
I decided to clock the system up for a quick benchmark fest. Got it up to 1580 MHz that seemed stable enough and ran 3d Mark 2000 (not 2001). I got 4850 3dMarks. This, I know, is *WAY* too low. I remember GF2 Ultras getting 10,000s+

I'm running Detonators that are up to date (I believe, I updated about 2 weeks ago), Win98se, nothing else running. I even tried AnalogX's MaxMem to clear stuff out (got up to 88% free of my 256 Megs)

... I have every memory setting basically maxed in the BIOS, the card is running the GF3 @ 200/460.

...meep?

As Walter said, it's probably your 4-in-1's.

Uhm..forgoten..I for some reason I have a hunch your avatar is inappropriate. Mayb not for the older folk but I'm willing to bet there are young'ins browsing the forum. When their parents see an unpleasant picture all hell breaks loose. Just a warning incase the mods get to ya.

4-in-1s were the latest as of (checks date on burned driver CD) - November 15.
As for 'being smooth at highest res' - my highest resolution is 1280x1024 (though most games seem to want 1280 x 960 as my max) - If I recall correctly, GF2 GTSes can do that resolution no problem. But even at 1280 I can tell there is a bit of jerkiness, particularly in new games (i.e. Ghost Recon Demo looks really jerky @ that res, further, it's crash happy at anything but 640x480). I don't play Quake 3 (*shudder*) and I haven't installed UT in about 5 formats because it just got...old. If you can tell me how to do a test with Deus Ex (Unreal engine) then I'll do that...because ATM my only 3d stuff is Deus Ex & Ghost Recon. I've been way too busy with lately to play games, and my last format-reinstall of Windows was November 15th (which is why my driver CD is dated that. Before every reinstall I go d/l the latest drivers, burn them to CD and lable it with the date)

Off-Topic-Rant follows:
I've come to the conclusion that this processor just doesn't like being OCed. It won't do 1600 MHz by pure multiplier at maximum voltage (well, 1597 MHz if you do the math. 133 x 12) - so I'm not bothering with an OC until I get a new proc/motherboard. Sorry, completely off-topic to the post but on-topic for the website :P

You might wanna check you haven't got anti-aliasing on and/or Vsync too.

Have you tried the 22.80 det's? I have heard they are the best ones.

The thing that is confusing me is why will it only do 1280x1024. My Geforce2Ti does 1600x1200 easily. I'd try going to www.nvidia.com and downloading their newest drivers. If that doesn't work try not oc'ing the system at all and see what happens. If that doesn't work i'd return the card if you can because you shouldn't be gettin those kind of stats at all.

i think thats because his monitor cant support any higher.
if it is your monitor stolid id also suggest you to check the VSync setting: if VSync is enabled and your monitor refresh rate is too low graphics will be rendered slow too.
violator said this and said also about the FSAA, this one could also drop your score by a large amount.

That would be my monitor yes.
Old 17" - 1280x1024 @ 60 Hz. I like it though, really nice images.
I'm a "all or nothing" type - so I'm not buying a monitor till I can afford the 24" Wide screen from Sony.

VSync, that wonderful frame rate inhibitor, is off.
Antialiasing is off. No 2x, no Quintix, no 4x.

did u remove the old video card drivers before installing the current one? using detonator destroyer if it was a detonator. if you were using other manufacters driver r u sure ther is no ghost file?
im asking because i heard of some huge drops in performance due to ghost driver files.

I dont think there is a problem. Although driver updates usually bring on performance. I don't think your score is anything to worry about. My 64DDR VIVO Radeon gets around 3800 in 2001 and gets about 430 in 2000. No, 430 ISNT a typo. 3DMark2000 doesnt like some newer chipsets and reports the score all stupid.

kingslayer, when u run the 2k things really seem that will give a result around the 400? if so that couldnt be its messing with the numbers.

Pretty hard to have ghost files left from a format isn't it? As mentioned about the 4-in-1s I got rid of everything on Nov 15th but before doing so went surfing for the latest drivers of all my hardware.

take a look at you directx control panel, into the display settings you should find out the AGP Texture Acceleration one. make sure it isnt disabled. other settings would prevent you to run the applications but everyone should be enabled.
