Alright, no Sata experience here. Been reading an hour and give up.

Abit NF7S Rev 2, nforce 2 board with a wd 80gb pata drive and xp pro installed.

Jumpered new wd 500gb drive to opt1 or whatever and cannot get it to recognize in windows disk mgt. The only hint of this drive is a POST raid setup option on boot. In device manager I have yellow question mark by raid controller. Does that matter if I'm not trying to run a raid?

What do I need to do?

what did you have to jumper on the drive?
you may have to manually set the sata to IDE mode or something of the like in BIOS

I jumpered it to Sata1 speed since my mb can only run at that speed, not sata2.

I don't see any way to set it as an ide device. I can't even find it recognized in the bios options.

I have the sata controller enabled and raid disabled.

Checked and my ide controller version is 2.6.

*Edit*

Windows update gave me the raid/sata driver I needed. Now dsk mgt recognizes it.

Never used this to format before. Again the new sata drive is only going to be for storage. How do I partition this?

*Edit* Got things setup now. Nm.
