Well, my mom's Clevo D22ES laptop w/ a p4 2.2c was overheating, so i opened it up and used AS5 on the CPU. First, i broke the keyboard connector, and now the bios and windows both report only half the ram thats installed. Obviously she's really mad, so can anyone help me here? Thnx

Is the RAM pushed in? Is the keyboard plugged in? If you broke the connecter, you will have to improvise, some tape should do :p

thnx for the reply. i tried using contact cement, tho that probably wasnt the best idea. the keyboard connector is now only the part soldered to the motherboard and the ribbon. the part that locks it in is broken in half. and yes i checked that the ram was in firmly. im totally stumped now. any more ideas?

Try removing one of the RAM sticks and booting to see what happens, then repeat with the other stick, assuming there's two.

Was the old thermal compound an adhesive or paste? Many laptops use a metal plate below the keyboard, attached to the CPU for passive heat transfer, and the compound is an adhesive. If this was the case, you may need something like AS Céramique. The paste may not be making contact.

thanks again for the help, im going to try removing each ram stick in a few mins, as im using this laptop atm. the really wierd part, tho, is that cpu-z and speedfan both report 512mb ram, but windows and the bios report only 256mb.

as for the thermal paste, that may indeed be the case, but it did not use an adhesive. the heatsink plate has 2 fans, and there is some kind of aluminum foil on the bottom of the plate as a contact area, which had more aluminum foil stuff wrapped around a sort of copper heatpipe that led to a small copper heatsink about 3 inches away. it originally used one of those wax thermal pads, which i cleaned off with alcohol. the temps are considerably better than they were, tho, so im happy with that at least!

You sure the laptop isn't using the rest of the ram for integrated graphics?

Yes, im sure the rest of the ram isnt being used for integrated graphics. The integrated graphics chip uses only 64mb ram, and when i boot with both sticks of 256mb each, windows reports about 192 mb of ram. Thanks for the suggestion, tho!

I also tried removing each stick and booting. First, i removed one, then the other. The second one appears to be dead, as the computer didnt boot with just that one in it. I also checked the slots by switching the two sticks, and had the same result. So i guess ill just have to get a new stick of ram:(
