I'm probably going to buy a Sony a400 from a local guy this weekend. I'm going over to his place to check it out before I pay for it. I would really like to get some tips from the experts here about what I should look for in the monitor: How should I test it? How would defects present themselves in the display? Is there anything in particular that I should look for to indicate a defective display or the beginnings of a potential problem?

Thanks for the help fellas,

oh ****, to make sure the monitor is in good shape is quite obviously to turn it on and check it out! umm, the one i got now has 2 lines (extreemly tiny) going horizontally thru the screen. you can barely see them. i suggest putting up a white screen and checking it thourgouhly and check for case damage. if theres case damage then the liklyhood for it being screwed is higher. and of course check for scratches on the screen. also when buying a monitor look for refresh rate (i'm not sure of a good one but i'd assume 75hrz) uh... look for max res size, the g400 is 1600*1200 but i know that sometimes using software and vid card types u can make it higher, but refresh rate goes down. also check for dot pitch, the higher the better. .26 :)

I was under the impression that the lower the dot pitch is better?

the one i got now has 2 lines (extreemly tiny) going horizontally thru the screen

these lines are more than likely due to the way the screens for the trinton monitors are made. If its like my dads monitor, the lines are about 1/3 and 2/3 up from the bottom. These are normal and have been there since we bought the monitor.

Those lines are stabilization wires for the aperture grille... the way they're made makes the grille prone to a lot of movement when the monitor is moved or tapped. This results in a shimmering effect on the image. The stabilizing wires keep it from doing that as much.
