View Full Version : AMD K6-2+ 600Mhz
Hi
I have AMD K6-2+ 450@550Mhz 2.0v on FR520 motherboard,
with BIOS for IN530(had to put it because FR520 BIOS doesn't support k6-2+). When I set 100x6 or 95x6 computer doesn't POSTs, even if I increase voltage to 2.8v. What cause a problem,
the CPU or motherboard ?:confused:

You've probably hit your limit, or else the 6x multiplier doesn't work. Try 112x5.5.
And are you using the K6-2 multiplier trick? (2x setting is actually 6x) Or does your mobo have a 6x jumper? And what's your max voltage setting, and what cooling are you using on this chip?

Yes, I'm using 2x and regular heatsink with a fan.
Can change voltage up to 3.5v and FSB up to 100Mhz (didn't find how to set it higher).
Took aluminum lid off the CPU and polished heatsink to make it stable on 2.0v.
I red, my motherboard can support up to 450Mhz CPU, but it works with 550Mhz now. In description about BIOS for IN530 says: "Added support for AMD K6-2/533MHz CPU table". Can it be BIOS problem?

I have the same chip on a different MOBO- While I have not tried going to 6x yet, I imagine that the problem is not with the chip or even the jumper settings, but either with the BIOS or the fact that you are not providing sufficient cooling. I have read cases where people have seen significant improvement in the attainment of higher speeds just be slapping a bigger HSF and thermal grease on the cpu. (with or without lapping). Be really careful with the voltage- remember- you have a K6-2+ designed for 2.0 not a regular K6-2 normally set at 2.3 or 2.4. From what I have seen, there is no need to take the voltage any higher than 2.3 to get results over 600, it fact it is not recommended. Notice that mine is set at 2.1 and I bet I could get 600 with it at 2.1.
If you are using the most recent and updated bios available, I would say that your only recourse is either to try improving cooling, or settle.
I have also read cases where the chips were running at the higher speed, they just were not registering the right speed- but that is a very board specific problem that I believe can be checked using benchmarking. Good Luck !!!:D
I hear that some Boards just max out at 600.
I got a question to add since i own a 500 K6-2. The k6-2+ run at 2.0v? i thought they ran at less Vcore, my vcore is at 2.19v and its not a k6-2+ it's just a CXT core.

Yup, as far as I have seen, the k6-2+ (128k l2 cache) run at 2.0v and as for the k6-3+(256k l2 cache), some run at 2.0v but most run at 1.8v which reduces the number of desktop MOBO that can use them. Both "+"s are made on the .018 process where as the standard k6-2 and k6-3 are made using the .025 process thus accounting for the difference in voltage, wattage use and subsequent heat output. The '+" models were put out specifically for laptops where fans and big heatsinks wouldn't fit. They are hard to find, but tigerdirect.com sells the k6-2+ 450 for $35 which is funny seeing as how it is superior to the k6-2 550 which is $50. Guess it has to do with demand given restrictions on the motherboards that can use the CPU and the lack of information thereof.:beer:
Welcome sergei. The stumbling block that was holding me back on my K6-2 (non+) was my i/o voltage. My board was set to 3.3v at the factory and I never considered changing it until about a month ago. When I put it to 3.45v then 112X5 became 100% stable, when I upped it to 3.6v then 124X4.5 became possible for the first time. Until then I had never been able to even post at 124fsb, now it boots and runs SETI rock solid. I suggest upping the i/o voltage a little bit. I don't know how having a "+" chip will affect your default settings for i/o voltage (if it affects them at all) so I'd check your manual first before trying anything.
I didn't find how to set jumpers for higher FSB on that motherboard, but anyway, how can I change i/o voltage ?
That info should be in the manual if you have it. If not you should be able to find a .pdf version on the manufacturer's web site. If not, well I'm out of ideas.

Is that big problem if PCI Bus is 37, not 33Mhz ?

It can be but it's not guaranteed. It depends on the quality of the PCI devices you have. My K6-2 is running with the PCI bus at 41mhz without problem. Generally speaking a PCI speed of 37 should probably be fine.

Best bet is to read info from CPU database and guides associated with the home page of overclockers.com. Thats a start- The k6-III is overclockable but less so than the k6-III+. Bottom line is increasing freq., multiplier and voltage on MOBO to increase performane without destroying your chip with excess heat. Different chips and boards have limitations and specific characteristics that influence the way to overclock and results achievable. You might also want to go to www.fic.com.tw to get the latest information on recent BIOS updates etc for your board.
