Hello all,

I'm looking at getting a Blu-Ray DVD player, but I'm torn on whether to get a dedicated Blu-Ray player or a PS3. I've read some reviews on the PS3 (they were older) and found out that people don't like the "remote" that it comes with (they say it is awkward). I want to know what you guys think (that have one/used one) about the PS3 (I don't care about gaming!!) Here is a full list of what I would like to know about it from your personal experiences:

1) Play quality PS3 as a Blu-Ray player
2) How does it work with the remote (is it natural, what is your thoughts)
3) Does it upconvert when it is not over HDMI? Like over component?

Thanks,
Thideras

1. PS3 is the best Blu-Ray player, in terms of speed and features [like BD-Java] that will be used in the future.

2. Bluetooth remote is really the only way to go; the controller is poor for BD playback.

3. PS3 will not upconvert SD DVDs [a big downer for many people].

deception``Can you post specific reasons why the PS3 is better, just looking for justification to buy it. :santa:

Also, If I get it, I will fold...lol

The PS3 is one of the faster Blu-Ray players out there; it takes less time to load a movie.

Many Blu-Ray specs are incomplete and will render [some] exisiting standalone players useless when it comes to advanced features down the road. Perhaps the biggest concern is that a lot of current players will not be able to support BD-Java, which will give BD titles the same rich features that HD DVDs currently see with IME [In Movie Experience for Warner Titles] and U-Control [Universal's creation]. The PS3, however, should be compliant with BD-Java and anything else that BDA chooses to implement in future players.

Phil Harrison did promise DVD Upscaling in the PS3, however a release date is unknown. As said though it is often called the best Blu-Ray player on the market. It is currently one of the only players that is internet enabled with over 1GB of storage for upgradability in the future, and sad Deception said, it is already supporting many new features such as Java.

Quick review on it:
From the outset, Sony intended the PlayStation 3 to serve as an all-purpose entertainment console, with tendrils that extend well beyond the realm of game play. But can the PlayStation 3 hope to compete with standalone Blu-ray players from consumer electronics makers?

The short answer is yes. The PlayStation 3's movie playback experience is best if you start from scratch, inserting a disc into the front-loading slot just as you power up the unit. The unit took just three seconds to load the movie Underworld Evolution, followed almost immediately by the opening sounds of the PlayStation 3 start-up orchestra. The screen then blacked out and loaded the movie disc; total disc load time, from insertion of disc to start of playback, was nearly 24 seconds.

Matched side-by-side with the Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-ray player, the game console delivered noticeably sharper and crisper image quality, with more depth and more detail than were visible on the Samsung.http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=3460

http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=3460That was the review that I read, they said they compared the PS3 to the first versions of the stand alone players.

EDIT: We have a Mitsubishi rear projection TV 65" with component inputs. This TV is only capabale of accepting 1080i (and lower). I see some threads on other forums from Nov 2006 that state there were problems with this and it outputs to a lower resolution (they DID NOT specify if it did it for games and movies, only games). Just want to make sure all the bases are covered before buying one.

I bought a PS3 last weekend just for the BluRay player and it performs very well. It's just as good as the 360 HD-DVD player except that the 360 HD-DVD comes with a nice remote controll and you'll either have to use the PS3 controller (seriously sucks as for BluRay/DVD playback) or go buy a remote.

My TV is like yours and will only do 1080i. The GOOD news is that theBluRay movies play beautiful and fine at 1080i. The BAD news is MOST PS3 games are 720p native and will not upscale to 1080i, instead will show in 480p in which they look no better than a PS2 game.

My advice, buy it for the BluRay player, but skip the games on it unless they say 1080i/1080p on the back and so far the only ones I've seen that do are the GTHD demo and Gundam.

I have decided to get no games (unless a really good one comes out :santa:) for the PS3, only going to use it as a Blu-Ray player. Actually, thanks to everyone that posted in this thread!! You have helped me greatly in deciding. I'll keep you guys updated.

Also, the PS3 is much much cheaper (last I checked anyway) compared to the dedicated Bluray players out there and they are only half as good.

If you buy a PS3, you better buy a few games when the good ones come out ;).

If you don't, I will confiscate it and tell you to wait a year for Blu Ray players to come down to ~$150 :-P

Wireless, remote play for a PSP, more space, built in card readers.

Nothing you can't replace, of course you'd need to get a 20gb PS3, and they stopped making those. I have a 20gb Japanese I'm willing to part with, but I would suggest going out to buy a new 20Gb if you can find one. Sony has a 1 year replacement warrenty, but I have no clue on the specifics :[
