Lost a couple of blades on this fan, my finger is still intact!

look at the thinness of those blades, and that is a sub 5000 rpm fan i assuem, try a Delta,at 8000 rpm's or a thicker fan blade HEHE

Glad ur ok

Yeah, let's see who wins if you play with a Delta :p Good to know you're all right

Thanks guys. Yeah, I have guards on my dangerous fans now, since I bloodied the tip of my thumb one time. This was just a baby... too bad I need a new fan now :(

Heh, I have a comair 172mm fan sat here, that thing wouldn't bloody your finger, it'd take it clean off :)

stuck my thumb into a 7000rpm 60mm 38cfm delta. (newer version of the famed black label fan) not even a bruise but it hurt a bit

no no no stick your finger in the delta 120mm 150cmf fan and see what happens

LoL stick it in a delta 50 after you sharpen the blades.

Why did you stick it in there in the first place?

i put my fingernail into the delta on my sk6, ripped it clean off.... freaking hurt

Delta's? Still too weak.

For maximum results I recommend your radiator fan...

In your car.

Car radiator? Ehh, SLOWER THAN DELTA! those go, at max, 6000rpm, anything over that, the engine will be going too fast, and could fail! Now, when you have an 80mm fan attached to a 35000rpm dremel, well...lets just say, I still have the scar!

Any of you guys wanna try a those fans above arena's etc where they push like 1000's of RPM and they run hella fast and the fins on those things..

I mean it'd wrap your whole hand and you'd spin around!!

:) Try it its liek a free rollercoster ride haha

sharpen blades hmmm, would that improve cfm ??

I doubt it, you're far more likely to unbalance the fan causing it to vibrate a lot and lose some cfm to boot. Assuming you could keep it balanced you probably wouldn't see any improvement - fan blades aren't exactly thick at the leading edge :)

the sanyo denki fan on my swiftech took a chunk out of my finger, it took 2 weeks to heal too. my knuckle went right into the fan and came right back out missing a peice and the fan did not even slow down.

True enough, less RPMs, but increased radius means increased linear velocity at the edges. Increased linear velocity means increased rotational acceleration combined with increased mass for an over all increased force by the equation force=mass(acceleration)

The dremel thing does sound a bit painful though.

I still got a small scar from an 80mm fan (just the blades and axle) being held by a pair of pliers in front of a house fan that REALLY shoved air. Needless to say, when the fan finally fell out of the grip of the pliers, my fingers needed a band-aid.

Most horifying fan experiance:
1 Patton House Fan (sharp metal blades) + 1 Hand = REALLY BIG CUT!
Nice 3 or 4 inch long slice about 1/2 inch deep into my palm. For some reason it didn't hurt that much... Must have been from my brain being in awe at seeing the muscles

OK it hurts more to try to comprehend what you just said than sticking your finger in an airline jet engine.

LoL jk
hey they dremel fan was my idea =[

rotational acceleration doesn't actually feature in the hand cutting force calculation.

What you wanted was force exerted by the decelleration of the fan blade. To get this you use thhe eqn. Impulse = change in momentum. Bigger mass and linear velocity means more momentum (mom = mv), hence more impulse. Impulse = Force * Time so Force is directly proportional :)

I knew there was a reason I didn't sign up for physics 2...

Actually the reason was it wasn't offered, I like physics.

But anyway, yeah, I knew that, getting late, long night of thinking (refer to thread Who Like Math) In fact I've corrected a few people on faulty physics lessons similiar to this one. (word of advice, science teacher football coaches don't like being corrected on their little physics of football lesson during team meetings. He was indeed wrong though, had the F = MA but was trying to say that one should accelerate at the hit because that was the only way to create a force, I corrected him the same way you corrected me, A is actually a deceleration. But anyway, I got to do some extra running for arguing with the coach. Ironically this is the same guy that looked at me like I was an idiot when I said rectangular form of a spiral because he thought I was trying to spiral rectangles. I guess the football dumbass wins out over the math/science teacher sometimes)

2 incidents involving finger vs. fans .. . fans won both times
1st: blue orb, it actually was kind of a tie. wasnt paying attention while i was feeling for temps, took a small chunk out of left middle finger.
2nd: 60mm delta, aka "screamer". was trying to route a cable over the heatsink when i rolled over onto a screwdriver wich in turn caused me to twitch slightly, and in goes my right index finger into the grinder. literally took a chunk, and there was enough force to stop the fan for a few seconds and knock the heatsink askew. . .scar ...

My GF and I are just laughing at what I started with this thread!!!

Seems like I am not the only one to lose blood overclocking...

She make me put the guards over all of the dangerous fans, like the big 120's and the high rpm ones's...

Blood splattered inside your case is a testament to you dedication, however! :)

Sharp edges on your case? Big Deal! The real danger is those fans!!!!

Physics is cool but I actually covered that stuff in maths :)

Spartacus51
12-13-01, 01:35 AM
Yup, physics is nothing more than applied mathematics. Covered a lot in calc because dv/dy = a and da/dy=jolt (or some other word similiar to that)

At any rate I enjoy em both.

Greedy Guido

I think physics is a bit more then just applied mathematics. There are physicist throughout the world up in arms over that statement. I must admit there are a lot of mathematics used to discribe these theories.

Do you consciously make an effort to stick your finger in a fan on purpose, or is it an accident? Is it like "Well dude I was standing next to the fan and thought I would stick my finger in it"? Inquiring minds want to know, if I should send out the traveling therapists to a few of your homes. :D
