ive never seen them before (but i never looked for raptors before either)
i though it might be nice to post a link here
and for the noisy part
cant you just add some rubber around the mounting area to absorb the vibrations?

The Raptors aren't that bad with the sound. You CAN hear them though, and that's what people are talking about. It's not like they will drown out any fans you have in the case with clicking.
if only it had a few led's or a ccfl that would be awsome if it flickered with the hdd activity

NO that wouldnt that would be cool for all of 2 secs till you started accessing your hd with the light going crazy at you... and these things are louder than a woodpecker 2 ft away from your head, my friend had 2 of em (older 74gb ones but all of them have the same horrible acoustics) he had 2 of em in his p180 wich ruber mounts hds on nice think silicon gromets and they were SO loud compared to my 250gb seagate perpindicular hds..
And they shurely will drown out the sound of a fan without any problems, yate loons are quiet but the hds will easily be heard over them even when they are at 12v... and i keep my yates at 6 so i like quiet!

I've got my 2 Raptors on Vantec Passive cooler mounts, with relatively no problem. Mind you, I've got 2 Delta SHE's in my case @ 7V. It's not that quiet.

I had a pair of raptors in raid. Dam noisey as hell. Evrytime you heard those things spin up and seek it sounded like those old 4-10gb hdds with windows 95  Tho they were fast, too noisey for me.
I snagged this 36GB Raptor not to long ago and the sound it makes kind of reminds me of the HDD in my old Gateway. Sometimes I can hear it crunching away over my 3 Deltas.

Raptors are not that bad. They do have their own sound signature. Now if they are attached directly to a case cage mounting. Your going to really haer the sounds of them doing thier job. If you hear them doing the beat of a song you just played, then worry.
Try having 12 SCSI 15k drives going off at once (My Ramen machine). Then you know seek hell.
Performance has some price. Not just monetary. If you want quiet, then go for the drives not made for all out speed of the platters. Raptors were not made to toss in a bedroom computer. Though with thought and planning they can be ok in that enviroment. You just have to put up with fast platters. There is a plethora of ways to reduce the noise signature of drives if you have the need. My machine is part of my livingroom. So it has to be not loud, but does not need total silence. @ 3Am I can hear all 4 of my drives firing off though. My SCSI machine was nutty loud.
well i can hear my sis'es old compaq chrunching a mile away and i KNOW that a raptor cant be that loud....
now my computer runs at about 37dba and i think it is quiet (it used to be much louder) and i cant hear or feel my segate sata drive...
but for a lanparty computer i would want the raptor x'es with led or ccfls to flicker with the hdd activity and have them easily visible to the people playing around me... it wont effect me because i get tunnel vision when playing games and thats the way i like it... DROWN OUT EVERYTHING

Raptors have a distinct "click" when seeking. It's not too bad if they're seated with rubber grommets.
I have a 36GB in one of my HTPCs and I don't have any issues with noise. It has nothing but the OS on it, but I still rarely hear anything out of it.

I have 2 of the 8 meg 74's in my rig.....
I honestly don't think they are that loud...can I hear them?..yes I can...does it drown out everything else?...not really..
I see some people claiming they are horribly loud.I guess its all subjective...
as for the RaptorX......I don't see them being worth the extra money...and the MTBF is half of the regular Raptors...

Just get one with a window and another without stick the one without the window behind the one with the window... saves some coin looks good.
