okay I was building my new system I got all my parts and stuff, and I started it it posted, but then I heard a pop, and I think that I fried the cpu. I looked after and it appears as tho the heatink was barely, or not at all touching the CPU. I thought the XP fixed this from happening, am I wrong?

the thermal diode is not completely working yet, AMD made it work with a mobo modification, but without it the CPU still fries. I don't know tho if your XP is burnt tho

Have you looked at the core of the cpu to see if there is any damage? If you have access to another computer, try your XP chip in that and see if it works.

no damage to CPU core, or any part of the cpu, it looks perfect from the outside... but it made that noise. so I don't know.

You could try it back in, see if it boots up or POSTs, that might say if it's fried or not

I tried it in my buddies computer he has a KT7 and it didn't post or anything, so I think it's done..

Maybe not, cuz KT7's and KT7a are told by Abit that XPs won't work on them, maybe try it in your own mobo and see if it does anything

good way to check if its burnt, smell it.. i have fried a couply of processor in my day of modding and i have notice that all processors seem have a small smell to them either on the back side or next to the core...

The cpu looks absolutly flawless. There is no smell, or burn marks at all... It doesn't post. Basically this is what I did and it doesn't work now.
Plugged everything in
Turned it on, and it posted..
went into cmos changed some settings, rebooted
didn't reboot, shut it off.
cleared cmos
rebooted and it started to start up then I heard a pop, and the system turned off completely.
now it doesn't even pist
Basically you could say I turned it on without a heatsink, I did use a heatsink but it failed to have contact with cpu. Now it doesn't turn on at all, the motherboard powers up though. Does anyone know what the lights on the KR7 mean? the yellow one is on, and the green one, and red one flashes once that's it.

If you ran it w/o a heatsink its fried. AMD's burn up in under 1 sec.
You might want to goto a local computer store and ask to see if they can test it in another motherboard but its prolly fried

Yah, I am going to give it one more try before I go to bed, if it doesn't work I am sending it back. I am pretty sure I haven't crushed it, and it doesn't look fried but I guess it is hard to tell. We will see in a few minutes I guess. but if not at least I will get some studying done while I wait for it.

Just for s**ts and giggles, check out your MB, and power supply. CPU's RARELY make any sound when they fry.

The motherboard is good I am pretty sure because it did post, and the powersupply was a 250watt but I only had the CPU and a fan hooked up, and a PCI video card so I doubt that that is the problem. I am like 90% sure it's the chip.. I am sending it back to them tommorrow morning, so hopefulylb y the begining of next week I will have a working computer :)

I would also try to put a bigger power supply on there check the ram and then if the chip doesn't work then ship it back....

I have concluded that the chip is fried because it doesn't boot at all anymore and it used to post, I have sent it back. I have to wait now. oh well better than paying for a new one.

Yeah from the outside it looks perfectly fine, I am not 100% sure that iwas even my fault that it got wrecked since there is no damage on the outside or anything. Oh well I sent it back I will get it next week. and the funny thing is, my heatsink finally arrived today :) hehe..
