View Full Version : What the heck is going on?! (OC issues)

So i oc'd my c2d to 3ghz last night and wanted to help it out more by getting rid of the stock thermal gunk and using some ceramique. I should have left it the hell alone.

k so i applied some ceramique and used a credit card to razorblade it and spread it out, did the same for the heatsink but left a lighter layer...

well putting the HSF wasnt as definitive as "in for sure" this time around so after getting fed up with it i made sure it was seated correctly and as far down as it can go and did whatever else i needed to do (including flipping the top fan around).

Well hell. Now i idle around 50c and core temps jumps to 65c then 74c within seconds, then i turn orthos off. WTF happened. I just went through hell with some part of the case and cut the **** out of my finger and now it cant even cool as good as before? wtf is going on? My cpu couldnt even break 61c with orthos running for hours the last night. GAH!

its the stock cooler, just thought id clarify.

gonna try reapplying the thermal grease...

I would try to reseat the heatsink. When you do, make sure that the little barbs (white hooks) don't have the plastic "spreader" still between them. (the "spreaders" are black plastic pins) If the black pin is still between the plastic barbs, then the barbs won't fit through the holes in the MB, and it will prevent you from getting a proper mount. Check to see that the arrow on the tops of the plastic pins are not pointing at the heatsink, if they are, they won't allow the heatsink to be locked into position.

I'm sorry that I can't make it any clearer than what I've written....if I was still at work I could take a few pictures to show you what I mean. I hope this helps more than confuses you. ;)

Yeah, stock socket 775 mounting is the WORST ever. Every time I have to put my heatsink back on I am convinced that this will be the time I snap my motherboard in two.

i understand, i reapplied thermal paste and reseated it and actually heard it clicking down this time, and since im short 2 motherboard stands (had to strategically place them) pressing down on the CPU makes the board bend ALOT and its really scary. Temps are doing much better now, i have orthos running to see if i get a similar or better result than last night.

sorry for the double post but coretemp reads both cores at 53c, so does speedfan but speedfen gives me the "CPU" temp at 58c right now whereas coretemp says "tjunction: 85c"

what exactly is tjunction?

I know this is obvious, but make sure that the screws are all in the open position when you put it on. I had no problem taking it on and off at all.You might have used too much ceramic, since you said you put it on both the CPU and cooler. Just a tiny spot on CPU should be fine.

There is a new procedure for conroe's when applying paste. It's around here somewhere if I find it I'll post.

Thats the nice thing about the stock sink , just turn the screws and it comes right off. The Plastic push part stays in the board.

well i tried applying paste a lil different this time and it worked, i just put a dab on there, used a credit card to spread it a little bit (but not razor-thin it) then cleaned it all off the heatsink and put it on. Seems to have lowered my temps 2-3c that way so i guess its right.

Wow that woulda been nice to know when I installed my 775, I was so used to the old 462 method of spreading it evenly over the whole die. Perhaps it's time for a reapplication.

yeeep lol. Anyways i got my CPU running orthos for about 3 hrs and it never broke 60c. Hovered around 58-59, but for some reason sometimes dropped lower. Anyways, im happy its nice and stable :)

hi'
you too ...

I read something about silver applyed on core2duo ...
since the core is in the center, it is needed to apply a thin line
a nice quarter inch large(but not so thick..) in the same way the core is set(just need to look on the back of it), and don't spread it over the chip, the hs will do it for you ;)
keep it off a quarter inch off the edge on each side, top and down.

my 2cts worth ....
