View Full Version : Fan/Sink for Radeon 8500
Dissolution

I have decided that I am definitely gonna have to get rid of the stock fan and sink on the 8500. But I'm not sure about a good choice of fan and sink that will fit it fairly easy. Any suggestions would be great.

Yep Crystal Orb it very good cooling and no lapping required, but if you can find copper ramsinks go with them and ASII on gpu and ram as I did with my 7500.

Looks sweet. Where did you purchase your cooling gear?
EDIT: Found them :D

Thanks guys But still one question. How is the orb secured to the card? Does the holes on the orb, match the holes on the card?
Thanks Again
You have to epoxy the cooler to the GPU w/ some Thermal Epoxy (like ASIITE) or w/ some Thermal Tape.
Same w/ the RAMSinks

USE ARCTIC ALUMINA ADHESIVE, ESPECIALLY ON THE RAMSINKS
You get a tiny bit of Arctic Silver Thermal adhesive on the ramsink pins and kiss your Video card goodniight. Arctic Alumina adhesive is cheaper, Isnt Electricly conductive, and dries fast.
Here's my Modded Radeon 8500

But to be honest a regular Blue orb or Crystal orb will do the job nicely.......Or you can go crazy and build a SLORB (Silver based blue Orb)

Here is Arctic Alumina'sInternational sales (http://www.arcticsilver.com/dealers_and_distributors.htm)
That Copper IU cooler is a great choice but you will need a dremmel to make a cut a couple one centimeter sqr cuts in a step pattern in the top right corner to fit on a Radeon 8500
That cut in the top right corner will allow you to use that Copper cooler, The OAC cooler sold Here (http://www.nexfan.com/29/171.htm?773) is almost Identicle to the one you posted
Nexfan.com also has a Thermaltake Rackmount Cooler that looks like a great GPU cooler:

I found these Tin coated Copper Ram sinks. What do you think? Are they any better than the plain copper Ram sinks.

nothe performance is the same between the tin coated and the pure copper, all the tin does is keep it shiny longer..

If you decide yo use an Alpha Pal 15u or that Copper IU heatsink this is a rough Idea of the two cuts to the top left side that will be needed to make it fit a 8500

Does the 8500 have the mounting holes?
Or do you have to glue it on?

I noticed on the instructions for the "AS Alumina Thermal Adhesive" that it says this could be permanent. Does this mean I cant take it back off and experiment with other Sinks?

It absolutly comes off as I tested it before I used it, 15-30 minutes in the freezer and it can be taken off.
BUT I spoke to the creator of Arctic Alumina Adhesive and he told me that you can add 1/3 Arctic Alumina or Arctic silver II to the Adhesive and it will make taking ot off easier at a later time.
DO NOT MIX Arctic ALUMINA with Arctic Silver II or Arctic Alumina Adhesive with Arctic Silver adhesive This should be avoided.
Its ok to mix Arctic Alumina and Arctic Alumina adhesive or Arctic alumina adhesive with Arctic Silver II, The thermal properties will not be affected
-Nevin the Inventor of Arctic Silver himself told me this and if you do, dont say I didnt tell you ;)

Why would you bother to mix AS2 with Arctic Alumina?
THe point of Alumina is that its totally non-conductive, so adding AS2 defeats that purpose.
Also where can I get hold of Alumina in the UK?

You didnt get my point, Im not saying to add Arctic SilverII to the Alumina mix, Im saying that you can.
Preferably you would mix Arctic Alumina Adhesive with Arctic Alumina thermal paste to make the bonding strength weaker so when and if you take off the heatsink for your next video card it will come off easier.
Wish I knew what vendor in the UK have it bro, Im sure someone will chime in and tell you.
Maybe the_overclocker knows he lives there (I think)

Yah man, be careful with ASII on ram.. I fried a GF3, and now I think the problems I'm having with my memory on my new GF3 are caused by the same thing. :( No more ASII for me on ram ever again.. silicone or alumnia is good enough without the risk.
Good luck!
P.S. I've found that the spring loaded plastic clamps you can buy at hardware stores work great for applying even preassure while the epoxy sets.

I fried to 64MB cards by breaking traces while using a screwdriver to pry the HSF's off!!!
I've learnt how to do it propaly now though!!!!
