I just got my XP 1600 system and noticed the power supply with it is only 300w.

I thought I read somewhere that the XP needs 450w or around there? Did they flub me with the wrong supply?

Thanks

Welcome to the forums,
Your 300w power supply might be fine and might not.
We will need to know the brand and model number of the power supply to give a good answer.

Thank you. Well Tiger Direct (the place I got it from) insists it is the correct power supply. Can they be trusted?

Why would 300 be acceptable sometimes and not others, am I safe?

Thanks

You won't know until you test it. Some 300W's are good, others are not.

The long version.

Because 300w is pretty much the mininum power supply needed for that cpu, the watts rating is not as important as current (amps) output on the +5v line.

Two 300w power supply's will often have different +5v current ratings one might meet amd's requirements the other might not.

If tigerdirect sold you a system then it should be good enough to power the system as configured at it's rated speed.

Like Flounder43 said try it.

Thanks a lot. So would trying to overclock at all be out of the question with a 300w, or would I have to buy a bigger power supply for such activities?

I'm not new to PC's, but am new to overclocking , so I'm learning as I go along.

P.S. Will putting in an additional front or rear case fan require me to upgrade the power supply? Or will the 300w one already installed be fine?

You can use a program like motherboard monitor to check the status of your voltages.

If they are extremely low at the stock settings then you might need a different power supply.
