View Full Version : Sending with VNC

I've just finished networking my 3 main crunchers together (and hopefully it will remain successful this time :)). I'm monitoring from the 1100 with VNC. Question is: is there a way besides ICS or cable-flipping to allow these other two machines to connect and send results?
Current layout:
Main machine with 2 NICs. NIC-1 connected to DSL. NIC-2 connected to hub. SETI machine and SETI2 machine hooked to hub.
ICS seems to mess things up when I try to use it (or rather, *I* mess things up when I use it :D), but if that's the only option, I'll maybe take the time to figure it out.
The only other thing I could come up with is keeping 2 dummy folders on main and playing at copy/paste when I'm ready to send and receive WUs. I know there are some others using VNC so I'm looking for your experience here... or anyone with a good idea, really. ;) TIA
Well for one thing ICS Should set up flawlessly, it comes shipped with everything from win98 on up. It's a snap to install and honestly in order to get the other two terminals to connect through it just go into internet explorer/tools/internet options/from there go to the connections tab/click on lan settings, select automatically detect settings and apply, click ok. Now open up a webpage on each one. If the page is found just fine you have set them up successfully to use ICS. From that point on you can configure them to connect automatically via Seti driver. Or if you are running just the straight command line they will send on their own.
J - Hope this helps a bit! Let me know if you have more questions.

yup. ICS shouldn't be too hard to configure comparing to other WinProxy software.
however, for my own experience (set up), i would prefer a router instead. much more reliable. 'cos if ur gateway machine is down (u know, it often if u r a o/c'er), the other machine ain't getting any connection at all!
i have 4 machines in 4 rooms. i had a wireless access point w/ 4 port hub router connected to a cable modem. then, one machine w/in the same room as cable modem & router/access point connected via ethernet. the rest of the machines r connected via wireless network. i'm too lazy to fish ethernet cable through walls & rooms, u know, it's PITA! also, every week when my GF bring her laptop in for uploading WUs, i just connect it to the router via ethernet to get access. w/ 2 more ports left, i could use the parts laying around to build more cruncher and get connection too.
but if u don't mind to fish cable through walls and ceiling, or all of ur machines is w/in the same room, then that will be another story. however, i still recommand a router since most of it had some sort of firewall build in which is amust for dsl or cable!! ;)
good luck!:)
You know a router would be a good investment if you plan to expand anymore in the future. Just set each box for dhcp - plug into the router, and select auto transmit on seti driver. Just takes the hassle out of it.

You could do what I am doing. Set up a "Seti Server," which is just a computer that has interent connection with all the seti folders. Then through the network you can access the folders and run Seti 24/7. It will send/recieve data in the working folder, and you can monitor it with seti spy as long as you have a spy in each folder. This works really well for me.

All great ideas, guys. Thanks for the response. Don't have time tonight to mess with it, but I'll try some of these tomorrow night... except the ones where I have to buy new stuff. ;) This 24 port hub was only $10 from a state auction so I think I'm getting more than my money's worth now.
