My laptop drive has been clicking a lot lately while its idling, I can't find any corrupt files and the SMART data comes back clean.

Listen closely at 7 seconds.

How old is it? It sounds to me like it's dying, so back up anything important you've got on there.

Have you defragged lately? If not, see if it takes care of the noise.

yep, I've defragged both partitions. when the disk is active, as in defragging or virus scanning, it doesn't do it. only when idle

Step 1: Backup the drive by any means possible.

Step 2: Buy a replacement drive. Prices are pretty good now for a upgrade.

Step 3: Remove the click of impending death drive.

Step 4: Replace with newly purchased drive.

Step 5: Use backup source to restore your previous drives contents.

Step 6: Recycle old drive.

Have a nice day.

Eh, I'll just use it till it dies. nothing of any value is stored on here (which is why I have 2 other desktops :D). If I start seeing currupt files then I'll know to order a new drive.

Who manufactures your HDD? Download their diagnostic utility and run that.

Does it sound like it's turning off then back on, like a bad power connector or firmware?

I have a Western Digital 13 GB that did that out of the blue, but couldn't find HDD corruption!

no, just sounds like the head is hitting the spindle, then resetting. like how a dog runs headfirst into a wall.

That's what I mean! But it sounded like the Molex connector was loose!

But I couldn't recall Windows even giving a squeak about it!

It wont, but its typical impending "click of death" for the drive signs. It may not happen right away, could take weeks or even months. And it doesnt always cause drive errors of any kind, till its about ready to go. But when it does finally go, its very quick, usually leaving no chance of getting to the data on the drive at all.
