Whenever i boot up i get a "WinMgmt.exe" and it debugs and closes. Then 5 minutes later i get it again. IT just keeps coming up and won't stop. Does anyone know how to fix this?? Thx in advance.

if you have not yet installed any of your service packs, go ahead and install service pack 2, this is just a guess and the first thing i would do because there are know issues here,

if that dosent fix it or already in then: u havent messed with your services have u? did u recently install what? what does your app log, system log say about it

yes, i have sp2 installed and no, i haven't recently installed any new software or taken any off. It just "appeared"

well whtt does your system tools/event viewer/application log/system log say

also create a new account and see if it repeats this error when you log into that new account

the system log: since the 10th ... error..dcom... event(10010), then, error.. service control Manager event (7031)

the app log says: error winmgmt event (60) and then it has all the warnings

from what i understand you are getting a boot into windows?
cause if not there is another procedure to follow, but if i am right try this:

OH, , you havent been messing with DNS? VPN or, term log on something like that prior to this?

try typing this at the command prompt and see what you get

"net stop winmgmt" hit enter---should return a msg.
then
"net start winmgmt"

this assumes that u have a bad call looping somewhere, and when u stop u end the process, also check your process manager and seee if something is making calls

reboot and see if luck is on your side, also u did not say if you could creat and log int another user account and see if this error is gone?

if that did or did not work i would also go to your Admin tools/services snapin and dissable the following services:

"Computer Browser"
"Server"
"Terminal Services"(this may not be installed on your system)

if u are only running 2k, and not doing any serving, u should be fine after that but who knows, i would also that u might want to reinstall sp2 if the other stuff dosent work, but these are all just my guess based on what u are giving me, and what i would do first

ok i tried all of that and i am still getting the same thing. I also tried to create another user and i did and it does the same thing for that. Thanks for the previous suggestions.. got any more????

.....no no it is not a server it is just my home machine and i have not touched the dns or vpn stuff, but i have also noticed another prob. No matter what my privacy and security settings are, my computer will not accept any cookies.

ok try this go again to admin tools/services and set "Windows Management Instrumentation" service to manual and reboot that might fix your problem

if not that,
that, cookies s/ settings stuff may have narrowed the offending program? , now try reinstalling/repairing IE 5.5, see what happens

OH yeas are you running an updated antivirus?
again im just guessing along here, but i am learning and enjoying this and someoneelse may chime in, or you might find it

ok i tried both of those and the same things are happening- the winmgmt error and the no cookies being accpeted. I am running the newest version of panda antivirus. I appreciate all of your help.

OK this is getting interesting

try this make sure the wmi service is stopped(you set it to manual, so it should be, if it is not then 1st set it to disabled and re boot, make sure it is stopped)

then delete all of the files that are in the %SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem\Repository folder
and reboot see what happens, all related but may not fix, also
have u tried ending the winmgnt.exe process from the taskmanager/processes and rebooting

also go to this link: http://www.tfi-technology.com/startstop.htm

and install that program , but after u instal it and before you restart, open it and click on options and deselect the run on startup option, then reboot and go to your programs and open it up and see what u are running at start up.

also see if you can clear you cookies cache, but first look in it for any exe files

run your antivirus too, do a full scan

u could also try reinstalling sp2, has a few winmgmt issues were patched, but that is just another possible, you could also try a full system repair from the boot 2kcd, r option, but that is a harsh step, and ther still might be an answer, out here somewhere, but these little system bugs are a pain to track.

ok after i cleared that folder it booted up and no error. you are the man turd. but i did a virus scan and still no luck with the cookies, and as far as my cookie folder it is 100% empty. there wasn't a signle thing in it and it still won't accept them. But thank you so much for your help with my main issue and anything else on the cookie situation would be greatly appreciated

ok great, always a pump when you boot and an error is gone,
cookies?
1st try this go to IE/tools/Internet options/Security and click on the default level box apply that change and reboot and see what u get
if not workking try this

do a search for cookies, find all your cookie files check and make sure that none of them are on read only, which could be your problem then lookinto all of them, cause u may have more then one folder, the go and delete every cookie file you find and reboot see what u get, also im sure u first checked your IE settings to see that accept cookies option is enabled?

NASsoccer
12-15-01, 02:10 PM
ok, set my browser to accept all cookies and no luck there, then i did a search and none of the cookies were set to read only.

yea did you delete all your cookies folders and reboot? cause thats why you went to the search screen in the start menue and searched for cookies, so you could find and delete all those folders

NASsoccer
12-15-01, 06:41 PM
i deleted all of the files and folders i could accept for cookies in the administrative folder because it wouldn't let me because it said it needed it. But still no cookies are being accepted

turd

delete that cookies folder from the cmd line

got to run type :cmd
then: cd documents and settings
then: cd administrator
then: del cookies

you should get an are u shure prompt then fire up ie and see what u get, cause ie will recreate a new cookies file, if that dont work try uninstalling IE, which will revert you back to like 5.0 theen upgrade that to 5.5, good luck
if this dont work the next place we will go is in to the regestry and som eother palces, by the someone might chime in

ok check this out run regedit from the run box and check these keys

1st
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CUREN TVERSON\EXPLORER\USER SHELL FOLDERS
double the cookies key it should say this :%USERPROFILE%

if not fix it

try this key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\InternetSettings
check the3 allow cookies key: the value data should look like this:
00 00 00 00

try this key:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\C urrentVersion\InternetSettings\5.5\cache\cookies
or instead of 5.5 whatever version you have

in that cookies folder you should have a key that says:
CachePrefix on this click modify and make sure the value data says: Cookie:

then you have one that says: PerUserItem
again click on modify and make sure it has a dword value of 1 hex

good luck

wow man i feel like i am wasting your time because it still rejects cookies :(. i tried all of that stuff and no go.

try this key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre
ntVersion\InternetSettings
check the3 allow cookies key: the value data should look like this:
00 00 00 00

the date was set to 1 so i changed it and still nothing...

naw this is fun, did you search all throgh your drive using the search option and checked that you only had one cookie FOLDER and did you check and see if that or other cookie folders were not set to read only?

then check this key: hkey curent user\software\Microsoft\windows\currentversion\exp lorer\shell folders

see where it says your cookies folder is point it to the spot that your cookies file is it should say something like this:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Cookies when you click on modify. make sure that is where your cookies folder is.

if those dont work go to this site download the trial (cookiepal)and set it up it will reset your browser for u it may work:
http://www.kburra.com/

try this last unzip this file and place it and the dat file with it into C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Cookies dir and overwrite the existing cookies file with it

there is still more but try these

turd
12-19-01, 08:02 AM
delete it from the cmd line then replace it then reboot
