ok so im looking to buy a new hd for storage somewhere in the 250-350gb range. I found this one on newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148140
Any advice on this one?
I would like to keep the price low, but will that mean a sacrifice in noise/heat?
Any suggestions?

That one is good. You don't want to buy anything crappy, for any part of your system.
The 250Gb of the 7200.10 is also good.

I just picked up a 320gb 7200.10 a couple of months ago. Performance is great. Silent at idle, but it does get noisy when doing a random seek. Overall very happy with it.

ok, but what is a good way to decide between brands, speeds, etc. Should I go with seagate, wd...

I would go with either WD or Seagate. I have one of each that i have had no issues with. I will say that the Segate does chatter a bit although that newer one may not, in any event its not all that loud. A 7200 rpm with good cache should be ok for a media drive i would think. I would get that Segate.

Standard hard drives are 7200rpm with 8/16mb cache. Speed and noise vary slightly between brands, but it's honestly a personal choice.

I use to buy WD drives, but my last 2 drives have been Seagate. A buddy of mine really likes Maxtor; Hitachi and Samsung also make good drives. Figure out what's important to you in a drive, read some reviews, and pick one you like.

I picked up one of these about a month ago. Really good price and runs like a champ ;) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136063
