yea i just built a comp for my bro and i installed win 98 on it, but then we got win2k and it wouldint work because of 'a hardware failure", no clue what that is. so i tried installing win xp (corportate edition) and i get an error after copying all the files that says <0x4, 0, 0, 0> and it says to reset the comp.

Try reformatting the hard drive and do a clean install of XP, then do all of the windows updates before installing any programs.

Are you trying to install while overclocked?

If so go back to default speed and install.

Try this:

If you haven't already done this run the Upgrade Advisor to make sure that you do not have any incompatible hardware.

Copy all the files from the XP CD to the hard drive and try installing from the hard drive.

If you still get the error then install 98 and try doing an upgrade from 98.

If you still get the error then you probably have some bad files on the XP CD. Get a replacement CD and try again.

what kind of hd are you using? if it's ibm there might be a problem with it that i ran into just yesterday. i was doing an install of xp pro and it kept giving me a blue screen with an error right in the middle of the file copying parts. i called ibm service and they told me that i needed to d/l a utility called disk feature or sthg like that. d/l from their website and install to a floppy, then boot off the floppy. apparently you have to do a "low-level format, and fdisk won't do that. anyway, you boot off the floppy and it'll show all your drives, and then you pick format disk, and it'll format it for you. fixed my problem, too. it only works for ibm drives, though.
