If its an older cdrom drive and not atapi ,you will have to install drivers for it ,(believe it or not) what brand is the cd rom?

Thats weird I was having this same problem on my computer earlier today.
It was recognized by the bios, but not by windows!
After screwing with the cable and the auto detect feature in the bios, I finally fixed it by resetting the bios back to the default settings and restarting.
Maybe that will work for you:)

Me too, Ok, I remember!
It might me your drive letter settings. If the CD drive gets installed on boot up to a drive letter that is not within your settings in windows, it won't recognize it.
Look closely upon boot and see what letter is getting assigned to the drive. For some reason, certain boot disks that I have used assigned it to "R"...
I don't remember how to fix it just now, lets see...
Either get it assigned to a normal drive letter, like D:, or their must be some place to change the drive letters in windows.
I don't know for sure if this is your prob, but that is what happened to me.

Do you have any reserved drive letters for an old drive in Device Manager?

I get errors like that once in a while after messing with the network settings...There is almost no way to get rid of that error without messing with the registry... Could be the prob, but I wouldn't bet on it.
Did you get a look at what drive letter is getting assigned to the cd drive? Boot into dos and see if the drive letter is there...
Otherwise, looks like a fresh install is in order.
